I'm thinking of switching oil and filters to Amsoil if I can come anywhere near the price. Enough of my money goes to companies like Exxon/Moibil/Shell. I'm especially interested in the Amsoil air and oil filters.

I've always been planning on adopting an extended oil drain interval but feel getting under and looking things over every few months is a good way to spot problems early.

I am still offering "my cost' pricing on Amsoil products so anyone that is interested, PLMK if you would like a quote.

GI Joes (a local sporting goods/auto parts store here Oregon) has started carrying Mobil 1 diesel 5w40 in gallon jugs for $21 bucks. More expensive than Rotella, but I think I will be switching.

The frustrating part is they have also started carrying Valvoline Premium Blue Cummins approved diesel oil in gallon jugs for $13.99, but only in the 15w40 formulation.

just curious...does anyone consistently use the mobil 5w40 for turbo diesel trucks and what are your opinions on this? is it just a marketing gimmick or does it actually perform a little better than other oils?

I've run mobile 1 5-40 ttd for something close to 12000 miles now. I switched from shell rotella and besides the bottle they come in i can't tell the difference. No matter what you use it's going to look like crap when you drain it. On my gassers a good oil in a good engine should look pretty fresh at change. If it doesn't you need to shorten the intervals.

I am considering for next winter changing to a 0-40 just for cold starts, it rattles like a son of a gun in a -10* start. May try to see if the lighter oil will improve it any. I'm not crazy about changing oil types and viscosities all the time though so we shall see.

The "stock" size Amsoil filter is EaO-34. A "supersize" version that will also fit is the EaO-26 - 1/2" larger diameter and about 2" longer.

FWIW, any filter that is threaded for 3/4-16 and has the standard size gasket for that thread size will work - provided that it's outside physical dimensions give you enough clearance to screw it on.

The usual reaction I get when I have people look underneath at the EaO-26 I have installed is "Holy crap, that's a big oil filter!". Stock Mopar filter looks positively tiny beside it. It added a 1/2 quart to sump capacity.
