i'm sure there are differences in the viscosity. as the oil heats up and get worked, synthetic doesn't get as "thick", resulting in less impedence for the moving parts.

Synthetic 5W-30 and mineral ("conventional") 5W-30 (for example) are the same SAE viscosity grade. Being synthetic or mineral has no bearing on that. And no oil "thickens". Viscosity-improving polymers are there to control how much it thins.

Imagine if you were running an actual Full synthetic oil like Amsoil or had Full synthetics in everything.
Both my KJ's and my 185,000 mile, 14 yr old XJ run all Full syn lubes and no leaks, no problems. My XJ had a rear main seal leak when I bought it but I fixed that, filled it up w/ Amsoil and it has been fine ever since, no other gasket on it has been touched since I have owned it. The additives in syns are even better for seals and gaskets so leaks are not usually a problem unless it is on a much older vehicle that was leak prone anyway.
Tha benefits to running full synthetics has been known for many years and FWIW, Amsoil was the originator for automotive use in 1972 w/ Mobil chasing behind 2 years later and offering No improvement over Amsoil. It has been proven since 72 and they are still following in Amsoils footsteps.

Sure it costs a little more to buy Amsoil initially but if you take advantage of even a double the normal mileage change interval or so it pays for itself. It is also an easy way to save doing a couple services a year and it is better for the environment too w/ less waste oil and filters over the life of a vehicle.

JJ,
Do take your change intervals out to the full 25,000 or a yr, which ever comes first?

Pote and everyone else,
I am also runnin AMS Oil front to rear in everything and have a WIX drop in. The jeep never ran this SMOOOOOTTTHHHH before I love the stuf and will gladly pay the differnce which, like JJ said, it pays for itself with the extended drain intervals. A little more upfront pays for itself in the end, especially when you place the best in your rig.

The Kj doesnt have 5 gears.

Mine runs 1800rpms at 60mph, around 2k at 65, and 2,500 at 80mph.

Its possible that it idles at a lower rpms though. Mine idles at 600rpms with mobile one and a K&N drop in filter.

I rarely go over about 10K in a year in any of my vehicles so I just change it yearly. I would however go by the severe service change interval of 15K miles or yearly in a Jeep.

Yes, I switched my XJ at 150,000 miles (when I bought it) and it now has over 185,000 and loves the Full Syn.

Years ago when i first started with Amsoil I purchased a '70 Pontiac Tempest, Low Grade GTO it was a 350 with automatic and the previuos owner had all documentation as to oil changes and all servicing by the book. But after installing Amsoil in this older vehicle I developed oil leaks all over the place front and rear oil seals and valve covers. This was no fault of well cared for engine it just happens but after proper sealing of all leaks it ran rather well not up to my previous Buick GS Muscle Car but good enough. Now years later I read of how many have cloned the Tempest into a Ba$tard GTO. As they say hind site is 20-20 I traded it infor a 260-Z 2+2 a great car to drive but the replacement Toyota '80 Celica GT was even more fun to drive  . I loved the Z and the way I set it up I humiliated many Corvette owners with a 260 Z only it had the 280 Z engine less the fuel injection so I added 3 each 2 barrel Webers carbs with headers and free flow exhaust. As stated It was fun to kick some body who was soooo superior with a Coevette only to cleean thier clock with a 6 banger rice burner. But that was then this is now. If you motor is aged it will leak with any high detergent oil, but synthetic still out performs due to it's superior propertys.
Hope this helped and not confused  8)

Not as common as you think w/ the better seals and gaskets found in newer cars. Like I mentioned before, I put full syn Amsoil in my 150k XJ and still leak free at 185K now. If they are in good condition it isn't as much of a problem as people think it might be.

So, stop scaring people!  (J/K  )

My Heart felt apolgies, I ment to advise that synthetic Oil is not the Holy Grail, If the engine is trashed no body can help. But if the engine in question is sound then synthetic will reward you with many advantages. I was only attempting to equate that I had a trashed motor an resulted in many gasketes and seals to be replaced. My fault no body elses. Additionally like your self who affers AMSOIL at cost so do I I didn't sign on to make big bucks but to help freinds and family to have the best synthetic on the market. But still enjoy the rewards of synthetic lubrication. Hopefully others will learn the advantges of Synthetic and will learn the we wish to help. Untill then allow me to express my heart felt support LOST member and if you wish our assistance just ask and we will comply

I completely agree. Synthetic is absolutely horrible especially if your engine is burning oil. It'll foul the plugs in no time causing you to lose MPG and in some cases, misfires. I had it happen in an '86 Samurai regardless of the fact that I had a hotter ignition system (CraneCams). Synthetic just doesn't burn very well, not that dyno oil does either, but dyno oil will burn better than synthetic.

Synthetic seems to be the way to go for any engine in good running order though.

I don't understand how oil would have anything to do with engine idle speed...

Oil that doesn't reach the bearing surfaces can cause serious engine RPM problems.

Just switching from dino to synthetic oil (regardless of brand) should never have a detrmential effect to the engine performance. Especially when it speciffically relates to the 3.7L engine found in the Liberty. Almost all of them should still be running strong unless they were miss-treated or maybe ran with a low amount of oil for a month or two... Maybe this goes back to the condinsation build up? What did it look like in the filler tube?

I read through the entire thread and still didn't catch the part about lower RPM's after using synthetic oil.. Can someone point it out for me?

Sure thing. Pote mentioned it in the first post

Pote wrote:
So I've done my second consecutive synth oil change (I'm now at 68-69K) and I have to say my KJ is now running smoother than ever - and it was darn smooth to begin with, like a top! It actually idles a full 100 rpms less than it did above and beyone the 100 rpm drop when I installed the FIPK intake. It now idles right at 500 rpms. After the K&N intake it dropped from about 650-700 rpms down to an even 600 at idle. now its right at 500 rpms and strong.

Thanks!

No wonder I didn't see it. I was looking for a "synthetic oil has ruined my engine" post.

The idle is probably lower because you can maintain proper oil pressure with less speed on the engine. Or it could have just been the computer making an adjustment in it's idle speed. I normally idle around 550 - 650 on most days.

So, the moral of the story is to make sure your head gasket and seals aren't completely thrashed and that you have good compression, then switch to synthetic.... or if you have a diesel, simply stay with it.
