Take your foot off the brake and lightly tap your accelerator. Now watch how fast you are going. I promise that you are going to go more than 5 mph. Try driving 10 mph in a parking lot. Nobody is going to make a left turn going that slow. The KJ was hit in the REAR quarter. That means the rest of the KJ had passed by the stopped KJ. At 5 mph, the Grand would have had plenty of time to stop. Also with that speed, the force would not have sent the KJ anywhere especially flipping over.

That story is a lie and the writer is an idiot and has something against KJ's and Jeeps.

And that last sentence sums it right up.

I was the driver of a 2003 Jeep Liberty Sport SUV, on June 16th, 2006. I was changing lanes to avoid a retread when the jeep lost control all of the sudden and fishtailed, and flipped several times. It was not raining, I was going the speed limit, but in one second we were in the air.I received hand and neck injuries, and the seat belt saved my life. But a friend of mine in the jeep died, and two others are still recouperating from injuries. They are the most unsafe cars out there! Do not buy or ride in one, tell others.

Gee lady, so ya misjudged the elevation of the retread and decided to basically drive up a small curb at highway speed and launched yourself. Yeah. That sure will make it seem like you lose control all of the sudden when you launch yourself like a rocket and are unable to recover it on the landing.

Quote:
My daughter was killed in a 2003 Jeep Liberty. For some reason which we will never know her Jeep Liberty left the road, hit a culvert and flipped 4 to 5 times. The seatbelt came unlatched and she was ejected from the vehicle. Do not by any Daimler Chrylser vehicles, the company has total disregard for the safety of their occupants and make sure the belt you are wearing is not made by TRW.

If the accident was unknown, how do you know she was even wearing her seatbelt? Unless a crash investigation proves seatbelt failure, don't immediately pin it on Daimler Chrysler.

Personally, I think half these stories are a crock, from people who just don't get it. The other half can't drive. It's easier to blame your car when youre in an accident, rather than own up to the fact that you're human and made a wrong decision.

all the stories i've read have been to driver error and people who should just not have a liscense. they just need something to blame other than themselfs. and if it was trully that unsafe the gov. wouldnt have let them on the road. so stop blaming the vehicle and fess up to the fact that you just screwed up.

I have noticed my KJ gets tossed around when there are high winds sweeping across the highway, but pretty much any vehicle with a high profile is going to have the same problem. I just slow her down a bit and i've always made it through just fine.

Yeah, the KJ does take to the wind when there are 40-60mph gusts on the highway. In that weather I to 50-55 and stay in the center of my lane and I am fine.

Guys,guys,guys,

Before you start calling people names just because they crashed the same 4x4 you love so much listen to this.

Normally the KJ is quite stable for a 4x4 and handles well in most circumstances but there is an exception and there have been crashes due to this.

There can be a problem with the rear slipp. diff when it is not maintained correctly, the rear slipp diff can lock up suddenly and without warning when driving around corners and especially when accelerating in wet conditions and it will make your KJ fishtail like mad or even get you into a spin.

Don't blame he driver for this as it will happen with normally dealer maintained KJ's as most dealers not even know (or want to know) if you tell them.

The problem is solved by changing the rear diff. oil and adding friction modifier, this has to be done every 12.000 Miles but dealer only do it every 25.000 Miles if at all.

Please do some research before you attack fellow KJ owners with a serious and dangerous problem and instead of calling them names find a solution for their problems and if you want to blame somebody, blame Jeep for not putting a service bulletin out for this potential lethal problem.
.

Having driven 154000 in one on all kinds of road conditions and weather. Having been quartered at a similar speed, having hit large area of ice and fishtailed repeatedly, also pushed the limits on private paved road, I have never felt any wheels leave the ground. Yes people need to drive responsibly. Its an suv afterall. I enjoy the vehicle and feel very safe in it. Happy motoring.

i gotta question dutchy's report. i got the rene, w/ "locker" or trutrac, is this the one you're talking about?
anyhow, i went to 80k before any service, did it myself, w/ a quality manufacturer recommended lube. never had any of the stuff mentioned happen. you can 'get away' with a heck of a lot more than most people think in this respect.
admittedly, the axel is 'slow' to come out of lock when leaving 4-lo. but that's about it.
maybe it's just that i'm used to driving something locked in the rear, used to have a g-wagon welded tite!

i guess i just get a little miffed with folks who buy equipment then don't even try to learn what it's for and how to use it.

The Detroit TT is a gear driven LS.....so no friction modifier needed.

If you have the factory Trac-Loc, it has clutches and requires friction modifier. If you don't put it in it will act funny.

Actually it was early December a snowy evening and in a corner I hit a patch of Ice and slid into a curb sideway cracking a chunk off my stock 6 spoke rim and breaking the bead on the tire and throwing the alignment off. Total repair $150.00 with the help of a LOST member selling me a rim. Now if these people had written this statement it would nbe something like this. :::

It was a pleasent winter evening all was beautiful night for a drive when suddenly out of noware a curb jumped out in front of me and the Jeep all on it's own ran right imto it shattering my beautiful custom wheel, trashing the brand new tire and totaling the entire front suspencion. Beware the Demonic Jeep Liberty they are possesed by SATAN AND THEY WILL STEAL YOUR SOAL AND TAKE IT STRAIGHT TO HE!!..

Need I say More ????

I am just going to share a little story that may be familiar to a few people here if you have been through something similar.

(some background... I grew up in Alaska, have been racing cars for years, and drive an ambulance for a living... I like to think I can drive)

I was driving between Cortez and Durango, Colorado at about 75mph downhill with a single lane on my side and 2 lanes on the opposing uphill. An F250 in the opposing lane apparently had a blowout and began fishtailing wildly across the center line and into my lane. It happened when he was very close to me and I had to swerve the KJ across 2 lanes of traffic at 75mph (and I mean SWERVE). Having done similar things in other vehicles, I was prepared for the rear end to break loose-catch something in the road-and roll. This is the exact sound that the KJ made "Chirp...SCREEECH....SCREECH....Chirp" The ESP had kicked on and the KJ stayed remarkably stable as I then had to swerve back to avoid the other oncoming traffic. It never fishtailed, it hardly even felt like it broke loose (I never had to counter-steer). All I got was a blinking orange light on the dash for a few seconds. This was all on an unlifted CRD with Wrangler ST's. I have driven a multitude of vehicles that would have rolled in that exact circumstance and I am truly grateful for this well-engineered machine.

I don't get it. I love fishtailing with the KJ (when I'm in control that is).

This weekend we got some snow and I found an empty unspoiled parking lot :D

I managed to drive sideways in the snow with full-time activated and the diesel engine howling as the tyres just spun when I hit the funny pedal. The girlfriend too was screaming and wanted me to stop, but I just couldn't let the opportunity pass. So I did it again when I left the parking lot and entered a little road with no people near it. That was really funny! Unfortunately, this being Denmark, the snow had cleared before the next day :( The girlfriend was happy again - darn.

So all I ever did was use full-time and do some slides in the snow. Fishtailing definatly works just fine on wet roads with these tyres. I have to be very careful not to let the back end kick out when accelerating from turns. I'm still eagerly awaiting to replace my tyres with a set of Cooper ATRs, see if that makes any difference.

That highway incident actually makes me a little weary of not having traction control in my 03. Hope that situation will never happen to me.

It's not a truetrac, it's the standard trac lock, a clutch driven limited slip diff that comes standard on most KJ's and it needs more maintenance and a friction modifier.
Your Detroit truetrac is a mod that has been bought and build in later, you can not compare them as they are totally different devices and have a totally different way of operating.

Imagine you driving on the highway in the wet, enjoying your bucket of slurpy, listening to some singing cowboy on the radio, you push the trottle a bit deaper to keep up with traffic and just at that light bend where you always drive trough at 60 mph suddenly your rear end locks without warning, that's what it is like and you will be praying or/and sh*tting your self if you have not got ESP to help you out.

It's not every KJ which will experience this problem and most off them are fine but there are KJ's out there with this problem and owners who are not aware of it.
Do some research on the internet and you will find several un-explained sudden loss off controll, fishtailing and groaning rear axles when driving away issues and they all relate to the same thing, the rear differential.

As long as people keep on blaming driving skills this problem will not be adressed correctly and it's such an easy fix to correct it, just change the rear diff oil more often and add friction modifier.

What would have happened to the ball-joint faillures if people blamed KJ drivers for dammaging them by hitting curbs?

Instead of helping your fellow Liberty owners with a problem, you guys are blaming them for their problems, what is this all about?

no! most kj's came with open diffs!
Do some research on the internet and you will find several un-explained sudden loss off controll, fishtailing and groaning rear axles when driving away issues and they all relate to the same thing, the rear differential.
yeah! while your at it do research on all vehicles. they all have unexplained loss of control stories! do to owners not willing to accept the problem is themselves!
As long as people keep on blaming driving skills this problem will not be adressed correctly and it's such an easy fix to correct it, just change the rear diff oil more often and add friction modifier.
this won't work on most kj's do to them having open diffs!
What would have happened to the ball-joint faillures if people blamed KJ drivers for dammaging them by hitting curbs?
Apples and oranges, you cannot compare the two. there was actually something wrong with the ball joint!
Instead of helping your fellow Liberty owners with a problem, you guys are blaming them for their problems, what is this all about?
it is about reality. if these people can't see that their "loss of control" is their in-ability to drive a rear wheel drive car correctly, then they are going to have more problems than this in life! mike
