I installed the factory trailer/tow wiring harness on the Jeep. Ran the new loom, hooked everything up, and I have no voltage to the tail lights. Everything else works. Any ideas? What is the rectangular box they have you mount on the panel? Any help appreciated. Thanks as always. I may have a defective factory harness. I really don't want to tear the Jeep all apart again :( The tester shows nothing, and the fluke shows no voltage. I made sure the ground was good. I'm stumped??

Yeah, I know... I should have checked before putting everything back together.

Pete

Pete,

If the plastic box you are referring to is located on the sidewall behind the rear seat, I believe this is the enclosure for the four relays (circuit protectors) for the 4 powered outputs on the tow connector.

I may be able to send you a few pages from the manual if you cannot get the problem resolved.

Best regards,
Dale

Okay,

Thanks for the info...

I'm going to contact Dodge tomorrow and find out how they want me to proceed. There's really no way to screw this up, so I'm assuming that there has to be a problem with the new harness. All lights work on the Jeep, and everything works on the trailer harness except the taillights. Ugghhhh --This is frustrating.

Test for continuity between the pins on the connector end and the plug in end for the wire that is not getting power.

Jeep dealer wants to charge me 1.5 hours labour to install a factory trailer tow harness, isnt that excessive?

If all you need to do is install the main harness, it is very easy. Just remove the seat belt attachments-two bolts and pop off the rear passenger panel. Then it is all plug in play---Unless you don't have the factory wires going back to operate the taillights. Then you need the aux harness and it needs to be ran all the way to the front and into the engine compartment.

Pete:
I know of your fustration, I had the same problem and took about three trials in a two year period, I just rented U-Hauls twice a year, to find the solution. You should have two wire looms, and one single red wire with an inline fuse. One loom goes from the trailer bar socket to the rear of the rear passanger side. It has a black box with the relays. The second loom goes from this point along the passanger side sill to behing the radio in the dash board. It has a light blue wire that you have no point of connection unless you have electric brake controls installed, and it also have a spade connector for the red single wire with the inline fuse. This wire have to be installed through the fire wall into the engine comparment and connected to the power fuse/relay box behind the battery. THIS IS THE FEED FOR THE TRAILER RUNNING LIGHTS. The factory body feed is not large enough to handle the continuos load of the trailer running ligths. Brake lights, turn signals and back-up lights feeds are taken from the factory body feeds.

This is a warning to all:

Even though you have a factory EVIC if you install the factory wiring harness, you may not have tail lights, 12V+ trailer, or a Brake control wire. You need to look at the factory connector that comes back to the passenger rear corner. I have a limited with the factory EVIC (Even chrysler looked it up to make sure) and I had no wires there. You can't go by there rule on the EVIC. I'm just letting everyone know in the hope that someone doesn't go through what I've been going through.

If all you care about is basic lights and not the trailer tow- You can take the rear fog light 16G wire out of its slot and put it in the tail light (power) slot. Then jump the relay for the rear fog lights up front on the back side of the fuse panel and you have a 10A fused at the fuse box wire already going back that will make your lights function.
