Hello All,

Just got my '02 Liberty three weeks ago. Did the first oil change this past weekend. Everything went smoothly until I got to the oil filter. After just about destroying my knuckles trying to get it off, when the filter did finally come off, quite a bit of oil poured out all over the top of the skid plate and (eventually) down to the floor which was thankfully covered with news paper.

My question is this; Is there any way of removing the oil filter to keep it from spilling oil everywhere? Does anyone know any tricks for doing this with a little less mess?

Thanks!

i unscrew the oil filter from up top (easier to get to)... and i only loosen it at first just enough to let the oil drain down the little runner that leads to a hole in the skid before i completely remove it... if you do it this way you should get by without spilling any... just make sure you have your pan lined up underneath where the runner leads to and you're set

Oh, OK. Thanks for the tip. I didn't realize it had a mechanism for channeling the oil down throught the skid plate. Great advice. I'll drain it just like you said next time.

By the way, that filter is a witch to get on. I need longer arms I guess. It's in a tricky spot!

I have yet to do an change on my Liberty, but a tip that works well and that I have used on my motorcycles is to use Aluminum foil to mold a custom funnel to channel the oil from the filter to the drain pan.
