Just broke my recovery strap trying to pull someone out of a ditch :? Not really a biggie as it was a cheap one and i've been needing an excuse to get a decent one. In my searching and comparison i came across a recovery tool called a cinch bone. Looks interesting, inexpensive and seems that it may add quite a bit of options to recovery. Here's links to a couple different ones:

Anybody had any experience w/these?

Looks like a piece of flying steel that could kill someone, should use a properly rated shackle to tie 2 straps together.Plus it's less likely to come apart with a shackle then that steel bar.My opinion though.

i'm sure that works fine, but you can get a clevis shackle for just about the same price and it will be a whole lot safer

YOU SHOULD NEVER USE STEEL TO CONNECT TO STRAPS IT CAN KILL

save your self some money ,and maybe a life
buy a good handle to a sledge hammer and do the same thing

If you think I am crazy call Jeep Jamboree USA and ask for the Mark A Smith guide to safe off road driving
it has the info in there

I always disagree with thompson, but on this one, i wouldnt recommend something like that, it slips, it flies. shackles are MADE for this application

don't use a shackle to connect two straps together.

Technically the Cinch bone is safer, but really they are just selling a piece of wood.

Your life or back tailgate is worth a lot more than ruining a towstrap (or just ending up with a really long one because they are permanently tied together)

use that money and buy another tow strap

with a shackle the strap breaks and you have a 2Lb chunk of metal on a sling shot

Not saying it's safe but safer then that metal stick which would do the same thing as a shackle and more likely to let the 2 straps come apart unlike a shackle.I would never tie two straps together, that's why I carry 2 straps, one 20',one 30',and if needed I got 100' of 3/8" synthetic rope wrapped around my winch drum that's rated for 20,000lbs.

Maybe some confusion here (maybe not) but from what i gather this is not used to connect 2 separate straps together. Seems to me it's intended use is to allow user to adjust length of a single strap without having to tie knots (look closely at pictures and read the description). Am i reading this wrong :?:

Seems then if used properly and strap breaks the bone should simply fall to ground. Again, i'm no expert and certainly not defending a tool i've never used. Just making sure not misreading it's intended purpose. Also, it's made of billet alluminum so not sure if it would actually be any heaver than a hardwood handle (though i do like that idea).

As always, thanx!

in the cabela's picture they are using it correctly, and that way is "safe", but its really the serving the same purpose as a stick. THat is to be able to get the strap undone after pulling on it. they aren't shortening the strap. And i see no benefit of its use in the second link when you have a removable shackle.

I see them using it correctly from both of the sights. All it is doing is shortining the strap. AND if you look at the pic it has a cable you can wrap around the strap as to not allow the "bone" to go flying. My .02

I have never needed to use a shorter strap in, so i guess thats why i don't see the need
