ok Ive got my front drive shaft unbolted, and I can't get it out. Its loose and everything but I cant get the thing out?

Has anyone gotten theirs out? Is the only option removing the exhaust? i've got to drive in the morning and want to get this over with. If all else fails I can just bolt it back up i guess....

you can not just un bolt the drive shaft on an idependent and still be safe to drive...your wheel could fall off! but no you don't have to removed the exhust

I had to unbolt the exhaust so that I could get it out, wasn't to hard just had to listen to the springs creak every time I turned the wrench. 13mm IIRC on the bolts for the flange.

To pull the front driveshaft out you'll need to unbolt the "Y" pipe at the exhaust manifolds and let it drop down to get it out and the new one in(according to the service manual).

Your talking about the front CV shafts,Hood297 is talking about the front driveshaft, and yes you can remove the front CV shafts and still be able to safely drive, many have done it.The front unit bearing/hubs are the same as the ones in the 2wd KJ's and they don't have there wheels falling off(as long as there LBJ's are good  ),they just lack the CV shafts going through the hub/bearing(which has a cover in the 2wd versions).

I removed mine and didn't have to take the exhaust off or unbolt it. The front driveshaft compresses together so you can get the transfer case side out and then you can raise that end up to take it off. I did it twice the same way. Good luck :D

wildrussian, notice that you have an 05 and i hae an 03. i think the tranny crossmember is different. I sat under there for 20 minutes compressing, twisting, jerking, and wiggling trying to get it out, no dice.

That's what I saw but I only had to disconnect the drivers side to get it down far enough to get theDS out. I'll check my mother's '05 to see if anything changed in that area between model years.

I didn't pay attention to the years, sorry.

I was lucky and I think having the manual transmission helped. I didn't have to loosen the exhaust system to get the front driveshaft out. TJKJ2002, thanks for the scoop on the front bearings, didn't know that helpful bit of info. :D

Yes, I think it was worth it. An original replacement shaft is going to cost you almost $400 anyway. I figured I'd do the extra work and find out how I could get a better drive shaft under there. I will be keeping this vehicle for a long time, now I have serviceable u-joints that can be replaced which will be WAY less expensive then replacing an original drive shaft again. So far the new shaft has run great. If you would like I can e-mail you a pdf file with some information you will need. Just drop me a line at wasatch@utahbroadband.com :)
