Anybody on hear have Detroit TrueTracs front and back? I am getting close to buying, and want to make sure they will not whip the back end around to much in ice and snow. It's a family car, and others drive it too.

Because of the physics of a limited slip, the vehicle will become more squirly in slippery situations (to those unexpecting). It will be quicker to fishtail in turns if it's leadfooted around a turn... With healthy bad weather driving habits, the vehicle will be fine.

With that said, I say forget the front limited slip and combine your money for a rear locker. IMO the off-road capabilities of the TT are mediocre at best.. (and yes, I have one)

I have Front and Read TruTracs - no problems
(granted Austin's only had 1 ice day in the year+ that I've had them)

i'm guessing a little bit here, but...
if you got t.t. on BOTH front and rear, i wouldn't expect as much fishtail and '"back pushin around on you", as you might see with just on rear. seems to me, the fishtail stuff would come largely from the front not getting forward as much as the rear with rear only application, so, with both, some of that would go away. does that sound right???
anyhow, if i was gonna do something to the front, i think i'd surely go with a switchable locker. i know, more $$$$, but much better road manners on dry pavement, and certainly easier on tires and front alignment.
and, for off-roading, if you've never seen it, find someone who has a REAL locker on the front, and watch 'em dig thru the mud!!!! you'll have to have one after seeing it!

DTT work great offroad...had one in the front of my 2002 KJ. They are set up with a bias of 2-3:1 so they don't really even need any brake input to start working. They also replace the whole carrier, so you will have a stronger setup. Yes, a LSD in the rear can cause the rear end to step out a bit...not nearly as much as a non-selectable locker.

Question is what kind of transfercase do you have? Command or Selec Trac? With Selec Trac you can use the 4WD Full Time in slippery conditions and won't have the "fishtail" problem...but your steering will be a bit heavier since the DTT will be engaged up front.

Like Darby said the TruTracs and another similar design the Torsen Gleason diffs aren't like other LSDs. They are torque sensing diffs that have no clutch packs and other parts that wear out due to slippage. They put the most power to the wheel that has the best potential to use it in just about any situation, but it drives both wheels while it's doing it and switches the amount of power continually from wheel to wheel as the terrain dictates. it's all done pretty seamlessly. Had a pair of each brand in my last 2 rigs, all went over 250,000 miles with no repairs. The biggest difference was in my Dodge D-50 4X4 which had an independent front suspension, huge difference in performance on all surfaces including ice and snow in Sheboygan, Mich. Even had a little fun ice racing while I was up there.

I normally run 2wd in the rain - it's not a problem
I can intentionally provoke a slide - but I have to nail the throttle while turning to do it - it's not an accident

The distinct advantage on Full time and front TT is in icy weather - you can feel the limited slip pulling you straight - it's impressive.
Although in Icy weather - you could probably run Part time - i.e. if you're getting a fair amount of tire slip you're not going to get
driveline binding.

I'm more consirned about wheeling conditions with it, does it perform just as good with only part time 4wd

I'm always in 2wd in the wet weather unless we get hit with a ton of snow, which is hit or miss this time of year
