Good point. If he only got the P1140 I would completely agree, but since he got the P0403 too, I think it's something involved with the SEGR mod. Like you said though, it's surely a lot easier to check on the fuel situation first, so might as well.

Thanks all. I'll check the wiring too. I still have the stock filter/filter head with everything connected (but maybe something shook loose on the filter when I wired the SEGR); I assume the WIF light operates, but the dash light has not come on, so I suppose it's possible that's not the issue.....

Sorry. When I first read this post, I missed he had a p0403 as well, so I have
been concentrating on p1140. I just re-read and see it now.
So, if 4 or 5 has came loose in the harness, bypass plug will not work.
You have to forget the SEGR box. It is out of the line with the plug. And with
the plug on, showing 4 to 5 not talking to each other would make sense.
But why is he showing p1140 at the same time?
Still thinking here
Steve

Well, when I had issues with my SEGR box (which we have eliminated as a problem in this case), I threw a P0401 and a P1140 at the same time. The vehicle ran like garbage and I had to pull over and put the bypass in place. After I restarted, I had the same codes and had to clear them, but everything ran fine. Fortunately I found the problem on the board, and now the SEGR is installed and happy. I haven't had a code since, and I've driven probably at least 600 miles since then.

I still really don't think it has anything to do with WIF at all. After some light Googling, I found a post by nescosmo on another forum about P1140 being a "Vacuum Reservoir Solenoid" problem on the CRD. If I had my repair manual CD handy, I would consult that to verify. Seeing as a P0403 is an EGR circuit problem, my money is still on pin 4 being the problem. Pin 5 wiring should be fine (unless UFO is having a streak of bad luck), since it's not even a factor at all unless you bring the EGR back into the picture with the bypass plug.

I'm sure the P1140 is being tripped in this case as a side effect from an EGR issue, so I am pretty confident both will go away with the same fix.

In any case, UFO, keep us posted.

Yea, Segr box is out of here. Bypass plug gives then same results, so it is somewhere else.
Vacuum solenoid has to do with turbo boost, so that ain't it.
What if FCV is not working right? Throws the same code as the EGR. Even with the SEGR kit
it is still mechanical, and might stick or malfunction?
What ya think?
Steve

Well, just for reference, found my CD. In the 2005 Liberty diesel powertrain reference, I found the following:

P1140-VACUUM RESERVOIR SOLENOID OPEN CIRCUIT
P1140-VACUUM RESERVOIR SOLENOID SHORT TO GROUND

Possible causes:

INTERMITTENT CONDITION
ASD RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT OPEN
VR SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
VR SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT OPEN
VACUUM RESERVOIR SOLENOID
ENGINE CONTROL MODULE

(and then later down)

VR SOLENOID CONTROL SHORTED TO VOLTAGE
ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - INTERNAL SHORT TO VOLTAGE

I'd comment further, but I have to head over to the dentist's office for a bit.

So, how does this help our buddy, UFO?
He is frezzing cold and needs to get this fixed. Not next week like soon.
If you read all above, he has a small problem, not large. It would be nice
for him to go work tomorrow knowing all was well with the CRD.For him.
For me.
Vacuum solenoid has to do with boost pressure and is also linked to the
EGR somehow, but I fail to see the link to what he has at the moment?
Lighten my eyes, please.
Steve

I can check the little filter thing too, very interesting. I am not particularly alarmed about this -- my wife is still driving it, and seems to be running fine. But tonight I'll be looking at some things like the #4 wire, the WIF connector and the turbo vacuum system.

Yeah, that boost pressure solenoid filter near the airbox is supposed to get replaced at least every 50,000 miles. I need to get around to swapping that out myself at some point, come to think of it.

Anyways, I doubt it's an issue in this case though, as I think the P1140 will go away once the problem that caused the P0403 is solved. I think the P1140 is most likely an intermittent code or maybe just the ECM being confused by something EGR related. I basically had the same issue as UFO, but as I said, it was P0402 and P1140 at the same time (I accidentally said P0401 previously for whatever reason), instead of P0403 and P1140. Both codes fixed themselves at the same time in my case.

I have confidence UFO will track it down quickly enough, as it seems as if he has enough ideas to run with for now.

Also, nursecosmo, sorry for not noticing your post before mine regarding further information about the P1140 code. I shouldn't have rushed the post as I headed out the door.

The boost filter seems clear. My water in fuel dash light is not illuminating. I checked the continuity from my connector pin 4 to the ECM pin C1-90 -- it's good. So I've reset the codes and restarted with the SEGR bypass plug installed - no codes come up, CEL still off. I re-installed the SEGR box and restarted. Still no codes coming up or CEL. I'll just have to keep an eye on it.

:(

Good deal, maybe just a loss of communication somewhere.
Don't forget the oldest trick in the book.
Disconnect the battery for a bit and let it learn all over again.

But did you check for water in your fuel?

Surely this little filter couldn't be the root of all the EGR problems, Could it? I'm going to take a look at mine asap just to see if it is dirty.

I think the service booklet that comes with the libby.
Every 6,250 miles check or replace that little filter. Of course
that list of things they are supposed to check, to me, some are
just crazy. Rotate and balance the tires is one. Rotate
maybe but I don't balance the tires till they need to be.
Anyhow, that little filter goes to the solenoid which also
has something to do controlling the boost pressure.
The way I see it anyhow.
Steve

No, I have not checked yet. How can the ECM have a WIF code and not illuminate the dash light?
