I'm sorry, but I don't feel it is right for any one person or group of people to be singled out as the cause for ANYTHING. I can understand personal experiences, but saying that those who street race or speed are the only causes to certain situations is just wrong. What about the soccer mom who's to busy talking on her cell phone or keeping the kids in order in the backseat and clocks the guy with the green light at 40mph and sends him to an early grave. Or the other woman who is too busy putting on her make-up to realize she isn't controlling her vehicle and almost hits 3 cars (including a fully marked police car), ran a red light, and stopped at a green light. Or the drunk guy that almost broadsided me as I was traveling through an intersection, can't pick a lane, and then thinks it's a smart idea to speed away at 85 in a 35. Let's not forget the guy who just plain didn't see the motorcycle making a left hand turn in front of him and took his leg off without anesthesia. Oh, I almost forgot grandpa who is 80+ years old, can't see 4 feet in front of him, swears that the other car backed into him, and won't listen to a word I say because he's been driving since before I was in diapers (since I'm only 24 that's highly likely). Don't get me wrong... My first fatal collision involved 2 kids (15 & 16 years old) joy-riding in a stolen car that hit an SUV head on coming around a bend in the road. Total impact speed was 148+mph. Both kids died and the woman in the SUV lost her husband on her birthday.

Like I said earlier, I can understand personal experiences. The statement "you are the cause" of whatever should not be made unless it has happened to you. Not a relative or a friend… YOU!!! Unless you were the one getting that phone call or knock on the door you can’t talk. Everybody feels empathy and gets higher insurance rates and that’s not what I’m talking about here. Accidents happen every single day.

I work in a profession where the number one killer is traffic accidents. In 2003, 80 officers lost there lives in “accidents”. 49 were involved in auto accidents, 10 in motorcycle accidents, 1 in an aircraft accident, 10 were struck by vehicles, 2 were in accidental shootings, and another 8 are listed in a category as “other”. In 2003, only 52 officers were “feloniously” killed. (i.e. – shot, ambushed, etc.)

I'm sorry for the novel, but I've been watching this for a while now and it has kind of been building up.

SO FAR THIS YEAR IN GEORGIA WE HAVE HAD ABOUT 20-25 OFFICERS KILLED IN CAR ACCIDENTS. I HAVE NOT SEEN ONE THAT HAS DIED OF BEING SHOT. NEXT TIME YOU ARE SPEEDING DOWN THE HWY AND SEE A HELICOPTER LIFTING OFF THE INTERSTATE JUST THINK, THAT COULD BE YOU MOTHER, FATHER OR OTHER FAMILY MEMBER THAT IS ABOUT TO DIE. THERE ARE MORE FATALITIES FROM CAR ACCIDENTS THAN FROM GUN SHOTS IN A YEAR. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.

I was trying to avoid talking about this but this is a very sore subjet to me. We have a drag car and I see the guys that think they have some fast stuff because they are out street racing..

We I will not be the first to say...anyone that is out driving a KJ...or any Jeep at over a hundred MPH is just plain stupid... I am sorry but there is just not any other way of saying it.

if you want to go out and do your stupid little import crap then please dont give the Jeep guys a bad name by doing it in a KJ or any other Jeep.

go buy a stupid little POS import and then everyone will understand why you are being stupid...

if you want to go race then by all means go to a race track and do it the right way.

if you are out going the kinds of speeds a few people are taking about ... You might KILL me or someone I know...stop it now...

there is a good chance that with all the folks on this internet forum...that someone could be killed because some Beavis think he is Joe Racer in a KJ for Gods sake.

Get a darn clue...the KJ or anyother Jeep is not a little stupid rice racer. get off this site talking this kind of stupid crap.

if you think you have something to prove to others how fast your ride is...then go to a legal track and see what it will really do.

Once you see that you rae nothing...start working on sonmething that will go fast on the track...the Steet is NOT the place for it...

There is really nothing else to say... except I feel you have watched the movie "The Slow and Lame" way too many times.

This is not going to turn into some stupid little so called racer site...so leave now. Go away... You are not impressing anyone here. Go find some little stupid racer site that talks crap...they will love you there. you can all talk about how your POS crap runs 11s...yea right...

I go to the track all the time and race a true race car so I know what they run...

the steet is no place for it..

later...Clint

Wow! Well said!
I've never raced cars but raced motorcycles professionally in my late teens. I am a big advocate of the "You wanna go fast? Get u're butt on a track." school of thought. The street's not the place for it. No matter how good you or your reflexes are there's always the unexpected. Unfortunately that unexpected may turn out to be someone's mom, dad, sister, etc. who has no idea how good you are and just wanders into your path.

Now for the "I learned my lesson the hard way lecture..." I did. I did my share of teenage screwing around on the street. After all, I was a professional racer. I have scars in alot of places, my ribs never healed straight, I spent my dad's 50th birthday surprise party in a hospital and just had a 2nd knee operation. (let alone the monetary cost!) Know what? None of that damage happened on a race track. Luckily the only person I ever hurt was myself. Nuff said.

I agree that street speed is not funny and should never be taken lightly. I am in no way trying to condone extreme speed or street racing. I am just trying to correct some common misconceptions. I understand the point everyone is trying to make and I think it is a good message. I also agree with Clint & Cacher that if you have something to prove with your car then take it to the track. The thing that I am trying to get across is that jumping down someone's throat and blaming only certain types people (which seems to be what is happening) for accidents is just statistically wrong. Using the reason that something MAY happen is just not right. A lot of things MAY happen.

Let’s throw some stats out there for ya…

The leading causes of car accidents, in order, are:
1. Rubbernecking - What we all do when a cop has someone pulled over.
2. Cell phones - Handsfree doesn't mean your paying attention.
3. Driver fatigue - Work too much, go to school, have kids or all 3.
4. Passenger distractions - Someone in the car that demands the drivers attention.
5. Scenery - Everything around the vehicle that takes the drivers attention from the road.
6. Adjusting the radio - I hate that song.

I know speeding wasn’t in there, but wait there’s more…

Other causes (not leading) of car accidents, in order, are:
7. Drunk driving - Bar is closed and now you want to drive home.
8. Reckless driving - The speeder category.
9. Vehicle defect - Poor maintenance or manufacturing.
10. Poorly maintained road - City, County, or State doesn't take care of the roads.
11. Malfunctioning signals - See #10
12. Other highway defects - Involves poor design of roads or barriers.

The main message that I am trying to get across is that no matter what speed you are traveling, your number 1 priority better be the road. YOUR attentiveness and planning on the road will be what stops you or a loved one from becoming the next statistic. It won’t matter how experienced or how much training you have if you’re not paying attention to what is going on around you. Telling me that I drive too fast and need to slow down without knowing me, what I am doing, what I am capable of, or why is just going to p!$$ me off severely. Just because you race a 1/4 mile strip doesn't mean you have the skills to take a turn in a car or SUV at 30mph and the same goes for me. The way a racer is trained to drive and the way a cop is trained to drive are two totally and completely different methods/techniques with the same philosophy. Get from point A to point B as fast as you can safely.

So with that in mind I will say to all of you that think speeding MAY cause a death that you better not touch that dial on your radio because you may just cause a death. Quit looking at your kids crying in the backseat because that moment of distraction may cause an accident and potential death. Make sure you get plenty of rest every night because that one night that you only sleep for 3 or 4 hours could leave you too fatigued to drive. You better not answer that freaking cell phone while you are driving. Don’t even think about making any calls either.

This may come as a shock, but most accidents involving officers don't involve speeding. They do, however, almost always involve drivers that are distracted, fatigued, or drunk. Drunks love the pretty flashing lights on police cars and so does everybody else for that matter. It's always amazing to see how many people have never seen a cop pull somebody over before. Everybody that passes by has to slow to a crawl so they can look. Don't say you don't do it. I do it, but for a different reason.

You know; It’s not the speeders in this world that worry me… It’s all of the morons on the road that don’t know how to control their vehicle and chew bubble gum at the same time. It’s also those that are willing to persecute others based solely off of one statement without knowing any or all of the facts surrounding a given situation! If you want to judge people then go to school and become one! Otherwise just answer the question! Or don’t answer the question and just read it shaking your head.

I would have to agree that the track is the place to go fast. Even though I have done plenty'o'speeding on the road and at one time had 14 points on my license and went to jail and had them suspended twice. I did not kill anyone or myself and was never in a wreck, but I paid alot of $$$$ to the courts and driving classes (it was obvious that I knew how to drive). Now I am older and I go with my brother to Mason Dixion Dragway were he races his 11 second 1/4 mile 72 mach 1. This is the place to go fast and it is legal (it took alot of my money to figure this out) As an adult you can preach to the youth as it was preached to us. It will usaually take something to wake them up such as JAIL (much more fun and less expensive to be there when playing monopoly) to wake them up. So I will agree that 100+ is an rush and at that time the only thing you are thinking is I hope thats not a cop but as I found out it is just easier to just do 5-10 mph over. Now I have a spotless record and I got pulled over for dead tags (stupid WV plates, they need a class on how to read these things) the thing I was worried most about was the points on my license, but the cop was cool and gave me 7 days to get them fixed and a get out of jail free card just in case I got pulled over again witin those 7 days.

now with that said.. everyone on here has been or is now.. a little younger and a little not thinking.. i have been there done that.. when i got my first car.. Chevelle.. i hooked it up and hot rodded it.. edelbrok cam/intake.. headers.. chrome everywhere.. new heads.. etc.. vroooooom.. high school was over and had to get real job.. gas too expensive.. so Chevelle sat and got new car.. so moral of the story is.. one day you will grow up and look back and see how stupid you were.. its one thing to have fun.. its another when you endanger everyone else.. like my wife and me.. or my family.. or my friends.. keep it safe out there and obey the speed limit or stay a little over it.. i sometimes follow the traffic on I-40 and go 80mph.. while people are still passing me.. sometimes i just set cruse at 70mph and go... I wouldnt want to be the one to tell your mom or dad that they found you flipped and wedged into a tree all because some RiceHead came beside you and revved his POS engine lol.. next time roll your window down and ask him for a real race.. over the next trail offroad..

my 2 cents.. keep it safe out there..

ok i get the point...it was a stupid thing to do....Even thou it was only for a couple of miles like they say most ppl get killed within 5 mi of their house and so on. This is the only time i have pushed the KJ to that limit and was just more curious about its ability...The speed limiter thing well i just like to know that i can do it not that i will on a daily basis and the track or a closed course is the "time and place" for such things. I plan on building this rig for off road and was more curious about if it could be done...I am sure that most (not every guy in here may be guilty) of us have done something stupid in the name of fun that we didnt quite think about at the time but look back on and say that was a stupid thing to do...I am guilty as charged and i really should have thought about it before hand...I was suprised that the KJ would actually do what it says on the speedo...So if you were wondering if the kj could do it it will....

1 Friend relearning basic motor skills. Drag racing at night, hits a deer and the spoiler from his Cobra ('98) Hits him in the back of the head.

TAKE IT TO THE TRACK! No one will laugh at you for winding out your Jeep in a controlled enviornment. My $0.02
