Well I finally got my Run Cool hood vents installed today, boy do they look sharp!

Not a mod you want to do if your not willing to drill holes in your Jeep,It took 84 total holes to install them. Also I used stainless bolts instead of the rivits.

Marked and ready to cut out center holes.......

To late now............

Really to late.........
Image

2 holes cut,82 more to go.........
Image

Since I'm not cutting out the braces, need to cut some drain holes(also to help with cooling) and access holes for some of the bolts.

All holes drilled/cut,a view from under the hood........

Painted all bare metal areas........

All done.........

Troy that looks good! It looks like it would have been a time consuming/tedious job, but would be well worth it by the looks of it.

Wow, looks incredible. So much better than I expected. I am glad you went with the flatter ones instead of the ones sticking out. You sure it won't start rusting and chipping away? What did you paint the bare metal area with?

Again, it looks great!

Thanks,

The vents are aluminum and powercoated black. All bare metal was painted(top and bottom) with flat black paint to prevent rust.

Looks awesome tjkj.

Youve got one of the best kj's around. It will be the best when you do that SFA.

I take it you leave the padding out to let the heat out, plus it would get wet.

What did you do about the paint in your engine bay? Did you just leave it black? Got any pics of it?

I got a question... if I did this to a CRD, would I need to divert rain on the passenger side?... i.e. will the hot turbo care if gets a bit of water on it during the rain?

In the mean time, this summer I have decided I am going to pull the block of weatherstripping off where the hood meets the frame towards the rear of the hood by the windshield. This should let some air flow out that way. I would have done this last summer, but was under the impression that the rubber was put on with adhesive- which would likely mean ruining it to get it off and having to scrape and re-glue it to put it back on (should I decide removing it was a bad idea). Needless to say, fiddling with it showed that It is not glued on-- it merely snaps into place. I was able to simply "unpop" it and take it off.

So starting in spring I am going to ditch it for the duration of summer and see if the infared thermometer says it makes a difference.

tjkj,
Those look awesome and really work with the colors of your rig! I was hoping you had to the chance to get those installed yesterday. What a great day for work working on a Jeep.

I dont think its really an issue, I know with the holes I cut in mine, I never even thought of the rain issue since I hose off my engine at least once a month the way it is anyways, little water coming in that way is no worse than driving down the road when its raining, running through creeks, or again washing the engine.
The biggest benefit is the hot air that escapes up through, even after 10/15 miles I can put my hand over the vents and feel hot air coming up out!

Yes there was,to help keep the engine bay temps down on those 2mph crawling trails. After 5 mins you can feel and see the hot air coming out of those vents.

Not worried about it at all.Like Tommudd said,I was my engine evry week and nothing has happened to it yet, plus I have a carport to park under(which helps) and while driving it will be darn near impossible for water to go into the vents unless it is a very hard rain or I'm stopped, but the engine will be warm and evaporate most of it fast anyways.

This is making me reconsider my thoughts on the side ports in the upper fenders like the older Buicks since they would unless extra venting from the engine bay or they only serve as a cosmetic look. I'm still considering it and relocating the antenna with a power /CB antena in the very rear corner post going up through the roof.
