Thinking about undercoating my Jeep, what do I need to know?

I had a Ford Ranger that someone undercoated the spare tire to frame. What do I need to remove before spraying? What do I need to tape off to make sure everything is still servicable. (I.e. oil filter, oil pan drain, etc.)?

Don't undercoat the engine,tranny,t-case,driveshafts,both diffs, exhuast, and any suspension componets.Otherwise tape off what else you don't want undercoated.

Got any pictures of your under body tjkj?

There really isnt as much stuff to undercoat as you think under there. I would definitely do both frame rails and the area over to the pinch seam and the cross members/front sub-frame. Almost everything back to the tcase is covered in that sound insulation so you cant do that.

No undercoating needed as far as I'm concerned.

Things that rust out are areas that aren't undercoated:
1) Rolled lips in the wheel well where salt can sit
2) Lower door edges where salt water (from the window channel) can sit for years
3) Bolts

The underbody on modern cars don't rust like in years past... [note: If you scrap bottom - repaint the exposed metal. ]

What kind of undercoating do you plan on using? I undercoat the Kj every year and have with all of my vehicles. I use the undercoating from napa, you can get the black stuff or a almost clear color. Do not get the undercoat that hardens and almost turns to a plastic which they use or use to on new vehicles from the factory, that stuff is just waiting for moisture to get underneath it and start rusting. when i do it i use a old paint gun for a air compressor and spray it on that way you can get it where you want it without making a mess and getting it on components you don't want covered like the ones TJKJ said. If you do get some undercoat on the exhaust etc it no a big deal just don't coat it. I also heated the undercoating before applying it to make it spray a bit better. After you are done applying it you should let the vehicle sit for at least a day to let the stuff stick.

JSC7002...Its not the best idea to bedline the underbody due to the moisture getting under it over time and rusting the frame from the inside out without you even knowing!!
