Okay so I got a new einch coming and it is all loaded with steel cable.

I plan to switch it out for synthetic stuff as soon as I can. In the mean time if I leave it on there for a while, what is the proceedure for "Pre-Strecthing" the cable?

I remeber seeing where Troy disscussed it before but I can not find the post. Troy (or anybody) if you could explain this for me while i try to figure out which syntetic cable to get and when.

I think i need to roll almost all of it out (except the last 5 or 6 wraps) and attach it to something (Maybe a dozen or so neighborhood kids, six of the real lazy video gamers in the neighborhood) and then start pulling it in and doing a good tight wind on the drum and then on itself. Is that in the ball park?

Thanks.

Pretty close     !

I just found a open area with a big tree or a big rock, wrapped my tow strap around it,hooked my winch rope to the strap, backed up while unwinding all of the rope but the first 5-6 wraps, placed my KJ in "N" and lightly applied the parking brake(to add some resistance)and slowly reeled in the rope.Be carefull is still using the steel cable, wear heavy leather gloves since you'll have to help guide the cable/rope so it wraps correctly,go slow and keep hands away from the fairlead.

I read somewhere to spool out the line leaving the amount you said. Attach to something safe like a large tree. Put your truck in neutral and use the winch to pull the truck till it gets to the tree. This of course would be on nice level ground. It didn't say but I would think you should do it several times.

Yeah i guess a tree would work better. The neighborhood kids would just kick and scream and run around not giving consistant tension on the line.

But some of them would make good anchors though.

Thanks Troy.

Do you have to do the same with the rope?
