TJKJ – I’m not saying you can’t two more than 3,500 lbs without sway bars, I just didn’t think that Jeep wanted people to tow that much behind the liberty without them. I just checked the owners manual and was shocked by what I read…
(Page 264 in my book under Trailer Towing:
• A Load equalizing hitch is recommended for loaded trailer weights above 1,000 lbs.
• Caution! – If the trailer weighs more than 1,000 lbs (454 kg) loaded, it should have its own brakes and they should be of adequate capacity. Failure to do this could lead to accelerated brake lining wear, higher brake pedal effort, and longer stopping distances.
The manual also had pictures of a dual axle box trailer so yes, I guess you can haul 5,000lbs but it looks like Jeep wants you to add a few things first. I guess the advertisement phrase “when properly equipped” goes past just getting the tow package? While I haven’t towed anything behind the liberty I’m sure it could handle 3,500 just fine without a load equalizing hitch. More than that and I guess I would look into getting a load equalizing hitch/sway bars.
