I've got an odd behavior, I'm thinking I may just let my dealer handle it under warranty, but I was curious how "odd" vs. "normal" the behavior is.

My 2005 Liberty Limited has the factory lock/unlock/etc remote transponder built-in to each of the keys.

Situation 1: If I use the remote to lock the Liberty, later use the remote to unlock the Liberty, I can open the door with no problem. Seems correct.

Situation 2: If I use the remote to lock the Liberty, then walk up and pull a door handle, nothing happens (door won't open, no honking/flashing). Seems wrong.

Situation 3: If I use the remote to lock the Liberty, then walk up and unlock the door with the key, then pull the unlocked door handle, the door opens and honking and flashing of lights occurs. Pressing "unlock" on the remote gets rid of honking/flashing. Wrong according to the owner's manual, unlocking the door with the key is supposed to be equivalent to pressing "unlock".

Is this how things are supposed to work? Or am I "right" in saying two of those situations are "wrong"?

I'll admit, I'm used to my TJ's behavior ... step through the nonexistant door, sit down. Simpler, but a tad chilly when it's snowing ...

I have an 03. To me it seems your wrong is right.

Situation 1: Same thing.
Situation 2: Same thing, no response pulling the door handle.
Situation 3: Same thing, plus turning the key in the ignition makes the horn stop too.

Maybe 05's are different or maybe bunches of us are tweaked the same way. You're definatley not alone and it seems normal.

On my 05

1. same
2. same
3. using the key to unlock the door no longer disables the alarm, if the manual says so it is wrong, if you unlock with a key the alarm sounds, inserting the key in the ignition and starting disables the alarm

wow, how stupid can that be. Seems like a good idea if someone breaks the door lock, then ur alarm would still go off on the 05's, but what happens if the remote stops working, u have to run and start it really fast!!

Sit 1: normal
Sit 2:normal, and why wouldnt it be, should the alarm go off if someone pulls the handle while its locked?
sit 3: I guess its normal on the 05's but no other libbys. I do believe ive heard someone else talk about this, cant remember for sure though.

Thanks for the input ... I guess it is just a quirk of the 05's that unlocking doors with a key is a "no-no".

Pretty sure that's how it works with a lot of vehicles. It's the least expensive but most consistent way to do a security system, since it doesn't have to deal with tempermental and false-alert sensors like audio broken-glass sensors, pressure sensors, radar, etc. The only thing it protects against is having the doors opened.

Case 1: Burgler breaks your window, opens door to get into car. Alarm would go off the second they opened the door without unlocking it from the remote.

Case 2: Burgler breaks the window, climbs through the window, takes a bunch of stuff and leaves, without opening the door. No alarm.

Case 3: Burgler tried to be quiet and use a slimjim or window wedge, coathanger, lock smashing, etc. Alarm will still go off once that door opens.

Case 4: You lock the door with the button on the door or with the normal key (not the remote part). Alarm is NOT armed, so nothing will happen. Badness.

Case 5: You leave the windows/sunroof open, but hit the lock button on the remote. While you're not protected from somebody leaning in and taking things, or even climbing through the window, you are safe from people who would reach in and open the door from the inside, because that will trigger the alarm.

Basically, what you want to do is get in the habit of only locking/unlocking with the remote, never with the normal key. Anytime you arm the alarm with the remote, but don't also disarm it with the remote before opening the door, you'll get an alarm.
