Installing Boulder Bars or having a root canal?

Well, I finally got my boulder bars installed. Took over 4 hours all-in-all. Drilling the holes was a killer.

Also added the front diff ring. 9/16 ID was too small, had an additional 1/16 removed and it fit just right. Purchased Rhino Ramps to get better access to the underside and they worked out great.

I would still prefer the root canal though, at least they give ya Vicodin......... :lol:

Next I have to get a good transmission skid, then I should be set for awhile....

I love to drill holes, even cut holes in the hood, :twisted:

what ever to any vehicle, its fun and very relaxing to me! :twisted:

Of course I keep vicodin on hand all the time anyways so couple of them , a glass of wine and drill away! :roll:

Hey John,
I'm close by to ya if you ever need to borrow anything. I've got ramps, 4 jackstands, 21'' hi lift floor jack, good selection of tools, torque wrench, pry bars, a pair of extra hands ect., ect..

Any plans for a rear locker?

Good question... because I'm sure anyone here would would much rather I install their rock rails than perform a root canal on them...although I think they both may be easy once you get the 90 degree drill :shock:

The question is, would you rather spend a couple of hours drilling holes in you jeep or spend 20 minutes getting a root canal done?

The proper drill bit makes the job easy.....for both. A cheap incorrect bit makes it tough...for both.

I agree... titanium coated drill bits make drilling steel MUCH more fun. They're not that much more expensive, except for the bigger sizes. Worth every nickel.

using a good drill bit is key in doing these. i used a Dewalt cobalt bit with a pilot tip on it so it wasn't to bad. still i agree it isn't easy to drill those holes at all.

You think drilling those holes are bad, wait till you have to drill through the cross member to mount the transmission skid! I still remember doing mine. One of the guys helping me lived on the base at Ft. Meade so we decided to use the base shop. Had it up on the lift using the air powered drill. Me and two other guys took turns holding the drill, it took that long to cut through the cross member with that crappy drill and bit. By the time we had the holes drilled we were almost too exhausted to heave the skid plate into position and hold it while we got it bolted on.

Was it really that tough? I didn't have the right-angle drill for mine and I'd still rather drill the boulder bar holes 1,000 times rather than have one more Rct. I've had too many of those already.
