good question.
I was actually thinking about that same thing this morning. When I did my Frankenlift, I saw that and was like WHAT THE HELL is this but I forgot to ask about it.

Yep, axle damper. Don't think it actually does much, I know Troy (CO) and some others have taken it off, thus neutering their KJs so they don't get to frisky out on the trail... :P

Don't take it off!!!! Your KJ will hate you for removing the "boys". It will break down on you, tell lies about you, and puke oil and tranny fluid all over your driveway.

why take it off though?? yeah it might hit some stuff but i might keep something from hitting a more important part  i just don't see an advantage in taking it off. i think i read it might hit the rear sway bar but i took my rear sway bar off a few months after i bought the KJ so that wouldn't be a problem for me.

I put my rear sway bar back on because I did notice a difference on the street (maybe cause of my limited slip?, I seem to get a lot more wheel hop with it off..)

I took the balls off because I was curious to see if it made a difference, and it doesn't.

so there is no real reason to take it off?
as far as the sway goes i couldn't tell any difference with it off other than flex. i guess I'm just use to it now though. i drive it like a lifted jeep not a sports car and i know better than to over correct in an emergency. Ive had enough track experience to not panic when something happens

I took mine off long ago also thanks to the mounting bar getting bent on a rocky trail here in the Rockies. Not sure how I can get it straightened with what I have in my garage and/or at no cost.

Its something that a Mechanical engineer said the kj needed. He was probably sitting in a small room somewhere proving it was needed by means of equations.

It keeps down vibrations.

Took them off my KJ years ago,it's still manly enough.

Plus it saved 35lbs of useless weight by removing them, and one more thing to get hung up on when out on the trails.

Anybody ever considered it's not for vibrations you DO feel, but ones ya don't feel, that could tear up bearings and such?

Just a thought. I know a lot of Fords have had the same thing hanging about.
