Sounds like this isn't really reasonable anymore with modern fuel systems, I've just always been jealous of the fact that my father goes a month or more between fillups on his 77 Ford F150 that has a second tank installed. Works nice, he fills up when its at its cheapest and rides out the highs...

From my POV, since I enjoy long trips, it would eliminate much of the anxiety of finding a filling station not geared for trucks.

A Floscan gage would keep track of fuel use. They have a new 2" panel gage coming out. Anything Aero/Marine costs an arm and leg.

I hope not, being certified by the state & all. I've put in more than 20.5 on several occasions, at different stations, but it takes FOREVER.

We did this on a MB and it was $700 but that was 15 years ago. Company who did it is out of business but they did a nice job.

DUHHHH! I must be getting slow in my old age. I completely forgot that Frybrid makes an in-trunk WVO tank for my '87 MB. That beast will do 500 miles on a full tank just commuting to work - 2 1/2 weeks of driving. Another 18 gallon tank in the trunk, and I could go for over a month without filling up. The now-annual 1300 mile trip to Texas would only require one fuel stop somewhere in route - in TX on the way down, in TN on the way back.

If anyone finds a decent replacement or addition to the fuel tank in the KJ do post up in the tech section!

I can't seem to find the web site anymore but there was a company in Australia that made extende range fuel tanks for the KJ,I beleve they where 120-130 liters and made of 3/16"-1/4" steel so no skid required for them.

wouldn't it be cheaper AND easier to just pack two 5/10 gallon fuel cans and carry them in the cargo area?

Some states and localities get nasty if you put Diesel in red cans. With the yellow cans the same price, why take the chance.

Sounds good, it means there is hope. Still there is an issue of shipping and an issue on the price

I hope there's a european place to get them from...

Yes that would be easier and cheaper, and it is a consideration. That said, I can't really put them in the cargo area since they tend to release fumes(ie: I don't need my whole Jeep smelling like diesel), and externally is just inviting them to be stolen in this age of $4/gallon fuel(and the idiot would probably think they were gasoline no less).

Reflex: Years ago farmers would fill 5 gal Gasoline cans with Diesel and put a pint of Gasoline on top to generate the Gasoline odor. Next day the thief's car would be sitting a mile down the road. Too bad Diesel is $4.00 plus per gallon.

Yes, and if it were only a gallon or two that would make sense. But since I'm not willing to go B100 for any distance, thats not realistic.

Hmmm, perhaps instead of a fully functional larger main fuel tank or auxiliary fuel tank, what might be more feasible is an auxiliary fuel STORAGE tank.

Idea best illustrated by my concept for the '87 MB - a 20 gallon pro street fuel cell mounted in the trunk, with an outlet hose and small electric fuel transfer pump, running to a FASS-style return line fitting installed in the filler hose for the factory tank.

When the fuel gauge shows the factory tank getting low, flip on the transfer pump to move fuel from the "storage" tank to the factory fuel tank. When the fuel gauge shows the factory fuel tank is almost full, turn off the transfer pump.

That would eliminate the need for 2 or more fuel gauges, multi-port selector valves and multiple supply/return lines, extra hoses and fittings, etc. The engine would always be running off the factory tank, fuel always supplied from and returned to the same tank, eliminating the possibility of overflowing a tank or running a tank dry due to the failure of a selector valve, hoses routed wrong, or flat out human error.

It would allow you to use ALL the fuel out of the storage tank without running the risk of having the engine sucking on a dry cow. And the factory fuel gauge would also inidcate when the storage tank was dry - if the transfer pump is on for a minute or two and there's no increase in level, either the transfer system has flat-out failed or the storage tank is empty.

Without the need to run all the electrical and mechanical hardware for a fully functional fuel tank, you could mount the storage tank whereever you could find a convenient location - in place of a set of rock rails as one gent mentioned - and it would make it far easier to remove them if need be for off-roading or rock crawling, while still leaving the factory tank and fuel system fully functional.

Now that is not a bad idea at all. I don't even know that you'd need it to be so electronic, just having something external to run to your normal fill location and a pump would do the trick. I don't mind pumping it, I just don't wanna get stranded.

I keep a 5 gal carb-compliant canister in my cargo compartment (and I have the rubber liner just in case) and I have 0 diesel smell.
