My 05 Renegade has tire pressure monitors in the tires valve stems and my indication light is on. I checked my pressures, all were fine, even the spare. So I was at Jeep getting one of my free lifetime of oil changes and I asked the service tech to check it out. He said it was most likely a bad sensor in one of the stems and that it would take them a 1/2 hour of labor = $35, plus the part = $75, to get it fixed. I told him I would think about it. So I called back later and asked if they could just shut the friggin sensors off since I don't really need them anyway. He said no, I could pull out the bulb behind the dash cluster so it doesn't light up, or I could have them take out all the sensors but the light would stay on because the system would register a bad sensor, which would leave me where I am now with a bum sensor and the signal going off.

So my question is, if I get a lift and new tires and wheels what am I going to do about the sensor going off then as well? How can I get my Jeep to stop telling me that there is something wrong with the tires, without replacing a sensor I don't want to use and won't be using here shortly anyway! Can I use the sensors in some Cragar soft 8s that will be coming shortly? If I can reuse them, is it worth keeping them? I don't want the stupid things going off every time I air down to wheel. The signal used to go away right after I aired up the low or high pressure tire, but I am not sure I want to worry about it with offroading. :?

I keep my 265/75's at 35-38 lbs and my light doesnt come on. when i air down to wheel it does (take them down to 15-18). but as soon as i air up they're good again. When we get a lot of snow i normally air down too.. and if for a prolonged period of time i do use a small square of black electrical tape :)

I know they are trying to screw me over with the money. I will try the black tape though I guess. Mine signal used to go off when I aired up too but no more. I know my old man wanted his F350 seat belt alert turned off and the ford dealer said they would do it, but for like $100+ so he said screw it. I don't see why they can't turn the dumb thing off at Jeep.

TRY THIS WHEN I GOT A FLAT MY TIRE LIGHT STAYED ON EVEN AFTER I FIXED THE TIRE.....TAKE THE SPARE AND PUT IT ON ONE OF YOUR WHEELS AND DRIVE FOR A DAY OR 2 AND SWITCH IT BACK. MY LIGHT WENT OFF AFTER THE 1ST 20 MILES OR SO. MIGHT NOT WORK FOR YOU BUT ITS BETTER THEN 100 BUCKS AT THE STEALERSHIP

Should be able to use them in the Cragars. I have the sensors in my moabs and they work great.

Rotate your tires and see if it goes away. The 05+ sensors train themself so something could be messed up with that.

And you can get those sensors off ebay for cheap.

I've asked this before about the Cragers and the answer I have got here several times is NO the TPMS will NOT work on Soft 8's. That's one of the reasons I am thinking AEV Bridgers for my future wheels.

the Cragars are angled different...you can use TPMS sensors in any factory Mopar wheel, but once you get away from Mopar wheels and wheels like the AEV bridgers that are MADE for Mopar products, you won't know until you give it a shot.

Technically, they will WORK in ANY wheel...but depending on the angle of where the valve stem is seated, it can be damaged if the tire goes flat.

So if the TPMS don't work in the soft 8s, am I doomed to a black piece of tape for the rest of my days or is there any light at the end of the tunne? :|

The black tape actually worked pretty well. I drove home from work, went to a dinner party/prize give away thingy, and drove home all the while completely forgetting the little piece of black tape was doing its job flawlessly. That is until you guys reminded me of it. :)

There's a method to turn off the TPMS completely on '03-4 KJs I think. Don't know what it is though.

Each tire transmitter is battery powered, the battery life is projected to last 7 - 10 years

Note that for aftermarket steel wheels the training magnet cannot be used and that a 125kHz transponder is necessary to retrain the EVIC to the sensors. This process can be done by the dealer with a DRB-III tool. The ID's of each sensor must be written down and assigned a location (LF, RF, RR, LR, SP). They are then rewritten to tell the EVIC which position each sensor is in.

Valve Stem Transmitters can be installed on any wheels that fit the KJ, whether factory or aftermarket, aluminum or Steel. The spare can be mounted on top of the vehicle and still be recognized by the system. Additional transmitters can be installed to fit another set of wheels and can be used when swapping out summer wheels/tires to winter wheels/tires or on-road to off-road tires. A spare tire transmitter can be programmed by the dealer if your current system does not have that option. The transmitter will broadcast its detected pressure once per minute when the vehicle is moving faster than 25 mph. The spare tire sensor will broadcast once every hour.

The answer is "YES"

So basically, I should have the tire company that mounts and balances my tires install and reset the valve stem transmitters? Will they know how to do this? Is it common knowledge for a general mechanic? Do you think that will fix my problem of not getting the warning to turn off?

I would think that most tire specialty shops would be familiar with adding transmitters and reprogramming them. From my understanding, you can buy generic transmitters that will work with your EVIC. Many newer vehicles have the tire monitor system, so this is not a new technology and has been around since 2002 in some Chrysler vehicles including the WJ models. However, I would ask to be sure. Or find a dealer that you can trust.

So I will check when I get my new tires to see if the tire guy can hook me up and check the sensors. How will he know which manner or way to mount the tires so that they are recognized by the right sensor and hopefully make my warning light go out? Is that something a smart tire tech will know as well? Should I just step back and let the experts have at it?
