Could have been a legitimate mechanical problem, could be someone trying to make a fraudulent insurance claim, but my best guess would be joy riders. Out north of one of the lakes here this is a regular problem - idiots steal cars/trucks, take them out to the 4WD area north of the lake and trash them then torch them. Seems like every month one of the local Jeep clubs is putting together a run to pull the burned out hulks out so that the forest service can haul them off:

OH.. and maybe that is why my liberty had a recall for the blower motor... which they said can catch the vehicle on fire :) (seriously it did)

haha, sorry about that! I saw some swirls and just couldnt help myself!

Sad to see that.. again.. Just saw that one on ebay last night.

I would say it was either joy riders or insurance. Alot of people cant afford stuff so they just set it on fire. :?

If you are involved with this try flipping them on their top and pulling from around the lowest point you can
kinda to make a sled ,we found that they slide much easier that way
we had to remove a burnt out car and did it with 1 TJ but we put the car on its top
