I was wondering whether I actually need to install an external tranny oil cooler. I have a 2008 Liberty North Edition, and intend to tow only a trailer with, at most, two dirt bikes - so lets say 1000 lb ABSOLUTE max. with some other kit on the trailer. I looked at my window sticker, no aux. cooler installed. Should I expect to see the transmission oil lines passing though the radiator? What do you guys think? I'm new to towing, as you can probably tell. Thanks.

I would say no, not for just 1000lbs. I see Buick Regal's pulling 1300lb jet ski's and they do just fine. This is just my opinion though, others may know more. Good luck, and lets see those dirt bikes!! I used to race when I was younger.

If you tow through Hot areas and pull long grades under load it would be a good idea to add in an auxiliary cooler. Any reduction in trans temp means more trans life if maintained properly. You should also consider using a good quality full synthetic trans fluid to help the trans live longer.
If you don't plan on keeping the Jeep forever, it is probably not worth worrying about.
