I've searched the FAQ, and my manual for this answer but haven't found it. What should I use the top off power steering fluid in the KJ? I called stealership and after a long hold I was told ATF+4. I know some autos use Auto Tranny fluid for power steering but wasn't confident with the answer I got, so why not ask the all knowing members of LOST? Thanks!

For the moment I just topped it off with some synthetic Valvoline power steering fluid.

ATF+4 is fine...

Same as the trans and transfer case, ATF+4.

'02 KJ should not have ATF+4 used as PS fluid,it can damage the pump due to the lack of some additives that ATF+4 does not have.

If you do a little research you will find plenty of info on why not to use ATF in your PS system even if it is recommended from the factory.ATF lacks many of the conditioners, additives, and basic hydrualic differences(your PS system operates at over twice the psi as any auto tranny will ever see) that make a PS system last longer(even ATF+4 and Amsoil ATF).

So is this for ALL years or..? I am just curious as to why you noted 2002 specifically, and if I should rush out and change it tomorrow.

My '02 states to use actual PS fluid in the owners manual so that's what I use and I have researched it a little and there is a major difference between PS fluid and ATF.You can run what ever you want but I'm not taking that chance myself.

Okay thanks... It'll take less than a quart, right?

i used atf+4 that i had in the garage, in my wifes 2002 grand caravan and it ruined the pump within minutes.....I later read the owners manual and found that it should use power steering fluid NOT ATF. The caravan and the lib might use different pumps ( i dont know for sure) but if it doesnt say specificaly to use ATF I wouldnt.

Thanks. That's interesting information. I, too, have kept power steering fluid in the '02. I didn't do the research, but I thought they were essentially the same.

But I thought there was a TSB that recommended changeout to ATF.

I happen to use MaxLife PS Fluid. I have a couple quarts left over from my son's Camaro that had a leaky hose.

I still run Type F ATF in my Ford because that's how it came, even though as they change ATF specs, Ford keeps back-changing the recommendation of what to use.

My steering pump was starting to whine a little in the mornings this past winter, so I turkey bastered the old stuff out and put in Valvoline PS fluid. It stopped whining right away and works great now. My FSM also says directly not to use Auto trans fluid in the PS system.
