Trying to make a final decision on what tires to put on once my OME lift comes in next week.

I live in Canada and this is my daily driver. I do little off-roading, but want to be capable...and I want to stand out from the crowd.


So I WANT the Cooper STT' s but the logical side of me says just stick with an AT.

Also trying to decide between the 245/75R16 and 240/70R16. If I choose the 70 series it pretty much puts me into an All Terrain. A 70 series also has the benefit of being very close to original stock OD and would likely not rub at all. The 75 series may very well rub even with a HD OME lift.

Please tell me what to do. This decision should be much easier.

(And yes I also like Bridgstone Revos, BFG AT KO's)

If you are stock stick to the 245/70r16.

What about the Cooper ST? Kind of in between a mud tire and an AT.

I'm very happy with my General Grabber AT2's. You might want to look at them too.

well the answer is easy
if you want to stand out then go with the STT's in a 245/75R16
put them on the OE wheels
You may or may not have to pound the pinch but other than that you should have no rub on the road
off-road you will need a rear bump stop spacer ,about 1" or so

We run a 245/75 MTR's on OE wheels with OME Med. coils and that is all we have on our '03
no clevis lift or any thing extra ,as of now but the wife is going out of town for a week soon

I just think that every one and their grandma is running AT's on black steelies and it is getting to the point of "cookie cutter"
the loss in MPG due to an MT vs AT tread is minimal as well as weight now the change in OD will kill you
we get about 15 city and 20 highway ,I think that when we go to 4.10's I will be able to pull 22-24 on the highway

Unless you need the mud tires for your offroad conditions are just have to have that aggressive look, AT's make a lot more sense to me, especially if you drive in snow and ice a lot. Then there is the fact that they last longer, get better gas mileage, and are quieter.

There are aggressive AT's like the Coopers, Kelly Safari MSR, etc.

The only problem with that reasoning is that AT's are not that good for poor on road conditions
if you feel you need more of a road tire and less of an off road tire then buy a "highway tread"
AT's at very best will go 10K more than MT's but will be no better than any tire as they are going to be worn
the MPG loss on tread alone is also very very minimal
yes they are quieter but not by much if you properly maintain the MT's

The way I look at AT's is simple
They are a compromise for every condition
Not good off road when compared to MT's
and not good on road when compared to Highway tread

With that if you plan to wheel then suck it up and get MT's
if you dont then get highway tires

If you are going with an AT, the BFG AT is the most phenomenal all terrain tire out there. It can be a bit on the $$ side but i have heard people that run them only on the road with very minimal off roading and have gotten 60,000 miles out of them, so they pay for themselves if you rotate regularly.

If you want to stand out and plan on changing the tires after 30,000 -40,000 miles anyway, GET THE STTs. They are a great tire. My buddy had them, and then regrettably sold them with his old XJ, but he liked them a lot.

The Hercules looks almost identical to the Toyo AT, just slightly less squared off on the edges. (side note: I ran the Toyo AT on my old TJ and hated them, but most people on here that run them love em) So I have no real experience with the Hercules tires.

Pro Comp makes a solid tires as well. They are known to be a bit weak in the sidewall, but you mostly want a road tire from the sounds of it, so punctures should be a non-point for you. Pro Comps last a long time and look pretty good doing it.

No experience with Bridgestone, only really bad experiences with Firestone tires that blew up on me.

Depending on the lift height you should be able to run either of those sizes I would think. Bash down the pinch weld and you should be ok.

My vote: STT or BFG AT.

--I don't view my General Grabber AT2's are a compromise at all. They are nothing short of phenomonal on wet and snowy roads (I just went an entire winter in New England/Spring without slipping once!). They are in every way superior on road in wet and dry conditions (handling, cornering, traction, braking) and only a hair louder than the Goodyear ST's that came on it, as well as the SRA's on my wife's Jeep, both of which are highway treads (granted they are sucky highway treads).

They are obviously light years better off road than the stock treads. They are great in sand (where I mostly wheel), dirt, and rocks, and although they are not too good in deep mud they are certainly better than a highway tread and seem to have good pucture resistance.

If you live in a place where it rains and snows a lot, and you only encounter real mud occassionally, you have to ask yourself if you really need the mud terrains. If you get the muds look for a set with a decent amount of sipes.

I agree that the BFG AT, which I ran on all my previous Jeeps, is also a great tire, probably even better then the Generals, but if money is an issue the Generals cost nearly half as much in some sizes.

I agree that Cooper STT's and other aggressive muds look cool as s*#t on a KJ, but could not in good conscience strap my daughter into her infant seat on a snowy/icy or rainy day with those tires based on the amount/type of wheeling I do while I am very confidant in the safety of my all terrains.
