MT which one hmm

Okay the time is up from having my lift and need to take a look at some mt tires. I have been researching a narrowed down to a couple tires. I work in the oil patch in Alberta Canada and it can get down right mud, but I live in British Columbia another province over and spend some highway time as well. I know someone is going to say Goodyear mt/r but I want something a little different and hear the mt/r wear quick. Any input is appreciated. Thanks again as always.

Maxxis Bighorn
Big O XT
Hankook dynapro mt

All of those tires will wear more quickly than non-M/T tires and they will all handle poorly on the road, especially with any sort of wetness. If you get them siped, they might be a little better.
Look into Dunlop Radial Rover RTs, BFGoodrich Commercial T/A Tractions, and Cooper S/Ts and S/T-Cs. All these tires have self-cleaning capabilities so they're better than an A/T in mud, but they have closer tread blocks and lots of siping so they're much better than any M/T on the street. Some have real good sidewalls, too. All wear better than M/Ts as well.
Just some more options to look at. Only the the Coopers are priced like an M/T, but the others are cheaper like an A/T.

My buddy ran Copper STT and loved them.
I loved my MTRs but everyone and their mother runs them (because they are a great tire)
I am getting ready to run Super Swamper Trxus MTs, but they are sitting in my garage waiting for the lift to arrive.
Those Hankook MTs look pretty sweet.
Never been a fan of anything Big O does. Had an 87 YJ with Big O tires and they were poo.
Maxxis is a good company and a ton of guys run their tires for rock crawling comps, but those are like 40" tires.
I had a set of Firestones on my 97 TJ and they blew out on me while the Jeep was in my driveway. Golf ball sized hole. Never ran their stuff again.

That said, I think maybe an Super Swamper SSR or Trxus would be a good fit because they both clear mud like champs. D i c k Cepek Mud Country is also a good tire will really open lugs. Any and every MT will wear fast on the road. It is the nature of the tires. You should just decide if you want to swap out for new tires every 30,000-40,000 miles or try for a 50,000-60,000 AT tire. That was what it came down to for me. I figured I'd want new tires after 35,000 miles anyway. Get some pics of whatever you choose so we can see the final product.

Seriously? The Cooper ST's and ST-C's are self cleaning? You sure about that?

If you want a mud tire, get one. There is no other way to go with anything that MIGHT see mud. My next set will be Kumho KL71s, I have MT/R's now.

I got 45,000 from my Discoverer ST's. My MT/R's have about 20k on them and are still at 12/32 (they start at 18/32)

My MT/R's handle better on the dry pavement and have as-good wet-weather traction as the Discoverer ST's. They make more noise...so what? I have a loud stereo...and when I can't use the loud stereo, my girlfriend is in the passenger seat, and her incessant verbal abuse drowns out the tire roar anyway.

The Commercial TA Tractions? Seriously? C'mon dude...the guy needs an MT, not some tire that'd be more at home on my Grampa's 2wd dually.

yea I need advice on MT tires. AT are great if you don't get into to much mud. In the oil patch it is like a mud road no bogs or anything just a road of mud. I would like to get a MT tire for sure with a little road manners. I am leaning towards the cooper stt because of the factory siping in them and the reviews are coming out good on other forums. I really like the look of the hankook dynapro mt and it is something different and the reviews are coming out well for that tire as well. The maxxis I am not finding a ton of reviews but it is slated to be take the good of and mtr and take the good of a bfg mt and mash them together to get the bighorn and has factory siping as well.

Check out the factory siping on my Trxus. Nice wide lugs for clearing mud too.

love the look consider them in a second but need a frankie to handle that size. Just looked it up and no 245/75/16 and I would have to prob run bump stop in the rear at stuff to keep them off the flares and need some soft 8 to redo my back spacing. Bds is a two inch kit and I don't think those would fit but darn that would be a sweet tire if I could make it work. I know someone on here is running 235/85/16 on a rusty's but I think the bds comes in a little to short to run those. Just phoned local tire guy good for giving deals. I can get 4 of those hankook dynapro mt for $866/can out the door and on the road or the cooper stt for $1050 out the door on the road. I think I might be a little different here and might run the hankooks. I need to think about this one. Get the wrong tire and stuck with it for a 50 000 km

modular is running 245/75-16 Maxxis Bighorns on 16x7 Cragar soft 8s with 4" backspacing and has very little rubbing with his BDS lift.

Good discussions so far and I definately agree with the point on the stereo or the girlfriend drowning out the tire noise. I'm putting my lift on when I'm home on vacation in washington here in june and from there moving to san diego. Most of the off roading around there is rock and there isn't much mud. Money isn't such an issue with me at this point as I still have lots left over from my Iraq tour. But for the southern cali area what would be the best tire. My top preferences so far are the BF Goodrich all terrains or MT, possably the Goodyear MTR.

MT's will ALWAYS get you more traction in dirt, wet or dry. As far as rock...I got no clue as to what works. tjkj will probably chime in on this discussion before too long.

So far, my MT/R's are GREAT when things are dry...but when they get a little sloppy, lateral and forward traction really suffer. I don't think that'd be a problem if you live where it doesn't rain a whole lot.

If you plan on wheeling on alot of rocks the MT/R's will suit you much better,much tougher sidewalls.I've heard great things about the Maxxis BigHorns also,almost look like a MT/R also.

Yeah, the Cooper S/Ts self-clean, even better than MT/Rs, which aren't even an M/T. My definition of self-cleaning is no mud in tread after slight tire spinning (necessary even on the best M/Ts). I've seen the S/Ts clean, they aren't the best but they do the job better than any typical A/T. The S/T-Cs are just the same with better sidewalls.
My Commercial Tractions self-clean as well as my Firestone Destination M/Ts used to, no joke.
That picture looks like an error in judgement. Swampers wouldn't have even helped there, the body looks high-centered in the mud and tires can't do much to help that, even if they do self-clean.

yea I know what modular is running and it actually buckshots he is the one who talked me into a bds kit and has helped me along the way and I know that a 245/75/16 will fit with the bds the reply high was relating to the trxus coming in 275/75/16 being to big. Trust me I want to run 245/75/16 and plan to, I am just looking at ppl personal opinions and tires they have tried. I don't think the cooper st-c is a bad tire but I want an mt tire and the cooper stt is top of my list. Just think if the st-c is that good then the stt must kick some stupid. Anyone else with some mt advice or take a look at the hankook and tell me what you think because I think that will be the way I go or the stt other wise. There isn't a ton of rocks around here and rains a lot so roots and a few rock beds nothing sharp and some sand on the river bed I usually wheel on, and then the mud I see at work in alberta it is slop. We get mud around here but you have to look for it.
