Weird. Battery went dead in a 6-7 hour period while parked

Yesterday morning I did some errands, picked the kids up at school and drove home. everything running perfectly. Went to go pick some dinner up about 7 hours later and got in my KJ in the driveway and turned the key...nothing. the lights came on in the overhead just slightly and I was getting that repeated clicking from the rear latch...clicking and clicking like it was trying to release the rear hatch. So I took the wifes car right up to autozone and picked up a new battery. Installed it and get in and everything is 100% back to normal. Full powered lights, no clicking and the car turned right over and is running like a top.

My question is, 1. Is this normally how quickly a battery could just die out? I checked to see if something had been left on, a door ajar, but no, everything was turned off and doors were closed. Headlights were not even left on. 2. What's the life on an average battery? this was the original stock battery from chrysler from 2003...so its exactly 5 years old. And lastly, if for some odd reason, this occurs again, am I looking at something like the alternator to be the cuprit of draining the battery to dead?

I'm happy it was fixed easily, just wondering what the next step is should it occur again while its sitting parked for some extended hours.

I had an issue with my battery draining dead and it ended up the issue was an inverter I left plugged in with nothing attached. The inverter just ate all the power anyway (which it doesn't usually do.)

Did you have anything plugged into your 12v outlet plugs (cigarette lighter plugs)?

I did not. Also, it's been two days now of regular starts and no problems...if I did have an issue, would it have drained a new battery again in the same way...meaning can it pop back up, or would I know by now already?

The neat thing about the liberty is ti will turn anything off thats pulling a load(inside lights, headlights, park lights, etc). You would of needed to have something plugged into a power outlet to run the battery down.

Probably just a bad battery. They can go dead without warning like that.

Agreed... On your last outing you might have killed off enough cells in the battery to make it a dud. They can go just like that.
