Hi All

Was wondering if any if you guys out there can help out.

I've just had an Ironman suspension kit installed on my 2005 KJ here in South Africa. As a result I've got a 40mm (1.57inch) lift in front and a 70mm (2.75inch) lift at the rear.

The front I'm not too worried about, it's the rear that concerns me more. What issues can show themselves when the rear is lifted this much? I'm sure I've read somewhere that driveshaft angle to the rear diff can cause damage if it is too high.

Comments please guys ( and gals! )

aaah, let's see

broken LBJ
broken UBJ
broken tie rod inner balljoint
rear shocks
l.f. wheelbearing shot

ow no, that's mine...sorry :( lift is coming of next weekend.

Only thing I can come up with is the rear ball joint on yours.

with only 2.75 inches of lift you should be fine, I have 3 and no problems

You shouldnt have any trouble with 2.75" in the rear. The only thing is that it would be hard on your shocks if you still have the stock shocks on there. And you'll need extended bumpstops if you plan on flexing the suspension very much.

The same goes for the front. 1.75" of lift wont be any trouble at all. Same issues though, struts if they're still stock and bumpstops.

Thanks y'all

TONY!! - You almost gave a an anurism there man with that list you rolled off!!

The kit came with shocks and springs. I also had a set of Bridgestone Dueler D694's put on at the same time (245/70/16's).

The reason I'm querying is that since I had the system installed I've found that the engine seems to burble more especially on an uphill. It could be that I did not notice it before whereas now my ears are tuned in listening for anything untoward.

I've heard of people dropping the transfer case (I think) to reduce the driveshaft angle. Any comments on this?

Also pulling off seems little bit slower but I'm putting that down to the slightly larger tyres I've put on.

Great answers there thanks, I'm lookin aroud here in SA for extended bumpstops but to get any accessories for the KJ is liking trying to track down hens teeth :x

Anyone recommend bumpstops from the US that I may be able to get sent down?

Also how much would one expect the suspension system to lower due to settling, I know that Ironman is not big where most of y'all are from but if I can get an idea that would help. Ideally I'd like the rear to drop about an inch to level out, if not then I'll be thinking of a small clevis lift

The KJ is "dropped down" lower in the front to begin with so adding a lift only increase that, do a clevis lift. contact teraflex directly maybe they can ship to you down there, I know from trying to ship things to tanzania that it can be a bit of a pain. On a KJ you do not have to drop the transfer case due to the design unless you get into say a 6 inch lift then you may

Looks good from the pictures, yes a small clevis in the front will help level it out some! Now it looks like it should have from the factory!

Hey Tom

I hear you on that one, the ground clearance on the stock KJ leaves a lot to be desired

the biggest problems you might encounter after a lift is a pulling in the steering toward the dirt when driving down the road, a constant urge to wheel your Jeep when you should be working and INCHITIS - the urge to keep modding your Jeep bigger and bigger until you are out of money and in debt. Basically all good things that are Good for you and your Jeep.

Yah, a new nudge bar or bull bar would be nice.... 8)

I'm also pleased that the KJ does not have the amount of accessories that Wranglers have available... too much temptation

mate

if your worried about the nose down attitude of your KJ you can get some 5mm prado front spacers split the weld and have them inserted in your front strut it will net you about 10mm of lift (just like a clevis lift)

looks good

Theres is one side effect that seems to be a constant problem with the KJ.
I know I have this problem and it just will not go away, It is always wants to go in DEEP MUD HOLES!
LOL no it is not a bad thing.

Lifted KJ's look so freaking good.
Man now all you need is a set of moab rims and new tires.

Thanks for the comments all.

I'll have a look at the Prado spacers but I think I'll go the Clevis route. The part of the ironman shock that goes through the clevis is actually longer than the OE shock so I'm thinking of a 10mm clevis lift.

I've read that people use locknuts as a clevis rings. Are these stable to use? and is there a guide here that shows how to do a clevis lift?

Hey Jeep Dawg - I just bought a set of new tyres with the lift so I'll be waiting... oooh, about 3 years before I'll do that upgrade  First up will be to level her out, then possibly a nudge bar or bull bar, most likely the former...

Already I'm getting the urge to take the road less travelled

As long as the clevis bolt is torqued properly, you don't need the nuts in there. Just make sure that the gap is the same on both sides. And make sure to get the alignment checked after or you'll need those bigger tires a lot sooner.

Thanks Dje

What is the right amount of torque to secure a clevis?
