One item of interest is Coolant Filters:

I remember seeing pits in wet sleeve liners back in the mid 70's that totally trashed out the cylinders and pistons. When I joined IH in 1980 they had Coolant Filters/Conditioners and the thought crossed my mind to have a way for my VM to last a long time and a million miles does not sound so bad. Monitoring the coolant and keeping the chemistry OK along with a way to keep the crud out with a filter sounds like a good idea. The only problem is the Filter/Conditioners are for larger 9.0L engines running almost all the time and may be too much of a good thing for a 2.8L. Therefore having just the filter and correcting the chemistry may be the smartest option.
Where to mount is the objective.
