Hey All

Maybe some of you mechanical minded gurus out there can lend a hand with something.

I recently had a Ironman Suspension system (Ciols and shocks) installed on my KJ and I took her for a spin today at De Wildt Trail, a trail in a small game reserve close to where I live in South Africa)

The new suspension works great and I now no longer scrape the belly when driving over anything the size of a small pebble. She faired very well over the axle twisters and dongas, she even made it up Gert se Klip (a steep rock incline) and back down again. Coming down was the only time I scraped, and it was a pretty heft one!

After leaving the trail today I noticed there was a lot of noise coming out from under the vehicle. Nothing wrong with the engine, still runs smooth and has normal power, more it was underneath the vehicle.

The problem is when driving on tar even the smallest bump or undulation in the road causes a fairly loud thump sound under the vehicle, I can also feel the vibration from this noise.

Any ideas what this can be? I'm wondering if when I scraped it bent part of the undercarriage so any bump would cause parts underneath to whack against each other. Or has it to do with the new suspension?

Thanks

Start by re-torquing all the suspension components. Look for cracked bushings while you do this. If it still makes the sound after doing that, it could be several things. sway-bar end-link bushings, tie-rod bushings, rear shock mount bushings being a few of the more common problem areas that I can think of. Sway bar is easy to check. Just take it off and carefully drive around for a bit to see if the noise goes away. Might also be a good idea to check the ball joints, just in case, but if it's driving ok I doubt that one.

Thanks Dje

I was thinking it most likely is the suspension. When took the KJ back to the garage to have the suspennion looked at after 500km I noticed they only did a visual.

I'll take it back today and tell 'em to re-tighten all the suspension bolts.

Then we'll see.

Groovy :D

So I took my KJ back to the garage that installed the kit and had them tighten up all the nuts. And guess what, noise is gone!

Great. I was a little suspicious this morning about the fact that they did not tighten the shocks when I had the suspension looked at at 500kms. The nuts all looked tight but that all changes when you've got 2 tons of car pushing and pulling on them

Amazing what a difference a few Kg of force can make. :D Glad you made them do it right.
