Well my alarm managed NOT to go off this morning before class so i woke up 20 minutes late. Decided to take my time getting ready this morning and headed up La Plata Canyon Road this morning, just outside of Durango, CO. Little rainy and as you can see from the photos, still a lot of snow up in the high country!

Beginning of one of the hundreds of spur roads up there. Lots of mining history in these hills!

Bring it!

So who needs a place to stay for the summer?
Image

Tough to get action shots by yourself!
Image

Posing!
Image

Image

This avalanche dwarfs my ride...they were doing some spring clearing today with a front end loader and will be the rest of the week
Image

Another 100 feet of trail to be cleared of snowpack before its back onto the sunny side of the trail.
Image

Turned around...heading back down
Image

Pretty cool shot i took coming back down
Image

Can you say MARMOT?
Image

Image

Pretty sweet waterfall. Almost 50ft. Below the trail and it was still a heck of a roar.
Image

Lastly, my favorite shot...a jeep runs through it :D

So you have total access to all this sweet, totally legal, dirt trails... that are close to home?

It's nice being 15 min away from RT66 dragway for my other car, but I need some local access to off roading too! (legal...)

Gotta love those Patriot Blue Jeeps :D

Thanks for all the replies and yes all this land is within 30 minutes of my house. Gotta be careful you're not on mining land up there though...guns are not uncommon, but there is plenty of national forest and camping access up there. Give it another week or two and i will be driving over the pass, just over 12,000ft 8)

Think of marmots as a cross between a beaver and squirrel. They just arent avid water animals...high altitude prarie dog without all the disease and plague :D

Great photos, amazing landscape you are real lucky to have all those trails on your doorstep. But be careful as i'm sure you are aware the marmot is probably the cleverest mammal there is,in your pic he may look like he is simply scrounging for nuts grubs ect ,but if you look real close at the picture he is holding a transmitter for an IED ,he's hoping to bag a kj'er as he's heard they taste just like chicken. :)
