While wheeling this past weekend an 01 Grand Cherokee took in a little water and hydro-locked. For those that don't know what this is, it is when water gets sucked up into the motor and basicly lockes the motor because a cylinder or two is filled with water. Most of the time this leads to a new motor, but we started a great trail repair.
1) Towed him out of the water and did not try to start the vehicle
2) Took off the air box and emptied the water
3) Used a rag and screwdriver to sop the water out of the intake (on a inline 6 the intake is on the side, on our kj it is on the top and you would not be able to or have to do this)
4) Removed the plugs (all of them) and cranked the motor. This allowes the cylinder to push the water out.
5) Let things dry out a little before putting the plugs back in.
6) Replaced everything *NOTE* Do not start the plugs with any tool but your fingers as this will lead to a large pain in the but for the guy that has to file down the threads (ME) that gets damaged.
Your Jeep will run like crap for a while until it burns all of the water out. So seeing white smoke coming from your exhaust is a good thing. For this guy it ran like crap longer than it should of so he went to the local parts store and pulled the plugs and found a damaged plug. The new plug made the engine run better but he called me on his way home and told me that he could not go into OD or use his cruise control. He went to the Dealer today and found that his Throttle Position Sensor was bad and this corrected the problem. I know this is a long post but not everyone knows what to do in this situation. He was luckey because he did not try to start it and he had some help. So never wheel alone and don't be afraid to try to fix someting youself. Also note to self "HAVE MORE TOOLS ON HAND"

a $400 snorkel at that point seems like a very inexpensive investment! You did the right thing, good job.

I've nearly hydro lock my discovery, but I was lucky and only got a little water in the cylinder.. it ran like shiat for 30 mins and after was ok. Probably help burn off some carbon!

Thanks! That post made my day. A fine example of what Jeeping really is: resourcefulness and teamwork. :)
