Got my transfer case and tranny skidplates but apparently thay have discontinued the engine ons for the 06 only make it for the 08 now. Got the t/c one on fine and the nutserts in fir the tranny but will put it on after I change th tranny fluid and filter. Changed fluids in the front diff and t case to Amsoil synthetics. Wasn't as bad a job as I expected. Now to find the engine plate.

Guys I put an offer out from a company that would be willing to build skids for the KJ based off of my '03
He wants only a minimum of 5 ,IIRC, VERY FIRM ,if you back out we will hunt you down, commitments
he would be on par or cheeper than other after market skids

I was talking with an FJ owner and he mentioned using 1/2" thick HDPE ,plastic, sheeting with steel supports for skids
stuff is slick ,cheep and STRONG ,they use it on the bottom of air boats
I plan to get some ,split the cost with him, and see what I come up with

I would be interested in a gas tank skid and maybe even a engine skid depending on the price

Well that is the problem
I can find 50 people who would want them depending on the price
He said "I will be the same but probably lower than what any body else is charging"
They would also be built to spec so if we want a skid made of 3/8 or even 1/2" steel he will make it
now figuring out how to support that kind of weight is our problem

Maybe its just in Canada, I don't know, just what the parts guy told me. He said he tried to find stock elsewhere but nobody had any. Maybe nobody goes off road in Canada.

If you went to the dealer then that doesn't surprise me. It seems that the dealers have problems finding any parts for my 02 KJ. It took them a month and 3 ordered parts to find the correct left signal light. Then, when i went to get a new electric fan they tried to sell me one that did not fit saying it was the only one for my model. The parts guy basically gave up looking and it wasn't until the manager came and helped me track down the right part number that i got the correct one for my KJ.

I can tell you now you're not going to get 50 - you could have probably gotten the 5 - based on what I've seen in the past - I think 10 would be a stretch on a first order - if it's good it might sell 50 over the course of a year - but not upfront 1st article.

I bent the Mopar skids at Moab and I've been looking for replacements - and right now - I've found Mopar and Skid Row - that's about it -
(for the fuel tank you can get Kilby) - the Mopar's are $50-100 per piece and Skid Rows are ~$200-280 a piece - and the irritating thing is that one of the Google search also
found a very bent Skid Row picture that Clint posted a while back - so I don't have any confidence that those will last.
However the Skid Rows are 3/16" with reinforcing and the All-J's - no longer made plate was 1/4" with reinforcing and side mounts -
I've never heard any comments about All-J's bending. So I don't think you have to go 3/8" or 1/2" - a properly designed 1/4" will work (don't forget the side mounts)
also Mopar made the 05- up engine skids thinner and then stopped carrying the 02-04's - but they're not stretched over the span that the tranny skid is so 3/16" should work up front.

i know a shop that told me it would be pretty easy to stamp out something akin to my ASFIR's... I'm not sure I would do them in steal though... they would weigh a ton. The ASFIR's are pretty $$$ but I think they are great. The ASFIR's weren't an exact fit on my 05 so i needed to fabricate my own offset nut by tapping a piece of 1/4 inch steal (I'm not a big fan of nutserts). I showed my skids to friend who worked at this machine shop and he guessed it could be done for ~1/2 of what I paid, that's in terms of time and material... but I'm guessing ~15% of my cost was shipping... and I'm not sure if they ship them from Isreal.... but add all that shipping together, plus margin, plus packaging, plus what my friend said it would cost to produce... and the ~$1K+ ASFIR charges isn't necessarily out of line. If there were enough folks who are patient enough I could possibly look into it... but it would have to be a lot of folks because it would take some time from my day-job.

Darby's running ASFIR's and likes them - but he hasn't taken the 06 to Moab (or at least he hasn't posted pix)
and they look clean - but 1/4" Aluminum isn't close to the strength of 1/4" steel.
(I'm thinking 60% - but if I find my materials book I give a real number)

I could be wrong, but I think the 50 was sarcasm. 50 people who will say they're in "depending on the price," while he wants 5 who are in no matter what.
