I have lately switched from WVO to "dark matter" and the little tractor is loving it. 8)

You are gonna have to "draw" it for me obviously, I don't watch The Simpsons. I still have no clue what NurseComo was talking about, or that alien drawing.

I know, I suck at life. I'll go back into my cave now.

'Dark matter' is a term that astronomers have coined to describe the unseen mass that throws all their calculations into a tizzy. In "Futurama' the ship was powered by a dark matter reactor, and it just so happened that Nibblers' race (the little alien dude) excrete it as waste so they always had a ready supply...

It's OK to not have a clue on this, it just means you're spending your time on more meaningful pursuits like 'Life'

The little dude in that pic poops dark matter which is the fuel of spaceships in futurama. To me dark matter is WMO which I have been blending at 75@ with 25%D2. It smokes a little when I accelerate, but that is cool  . The beauty of it is that unlike WVO it can be run in a single tank system without fear of cylinder wall or ring glazing, and it won't polymerize the crankcase oil. I am ordering a set of injector line heaters so that I can experiment with higher percentages.

My wallet thanks me every time I pass a gas station for wasting all my time on useless pursuits instead of being occupied with life.

Wait one... You are using waste MOTOR oil? Please tell me you are at least filtering the heck out of it, I wouldn't want all the suspended metals in used oil in my cylinders. I'm less concerned about veggie oil, b/c most of the contaminants there are at least softer than the metal engine, or flammable. That, and the particles are usually larger. Crumbs of KFC don't make it through the filter. :D

I'm impressed that someone is using engine oil tho. Very cool.

Duh! Of course it's filtered, I don't like changing out fuel filters on the side of the road. The idea that WMO if full of things that are harmful to the engine is an old argument but one however which is totally unfounded on reality. Don't you think that the crank case oil already covering your cylinder walls or the oil from the ccv would have done damage by now? WMO is commonly thought to be full of metals but the iron and aluminum levels are usually measured at less than 100ppm and the particle size is sub micron and therefore harmless. The contaminant found in the highest quantity is carbon and there is a lot of it. Most carbon particle conglomerations occur in the sub 10 micron size but they can go up to 30 microns which is the filtration limit of a new oil filter. Carbon is a good thing to have in your oil for its lubrication properties (think graphite) but when there is too much the viscosity suffers. The other common component often found in WMO is silica; this is a bad thing to have in your fuel, however it is also only found in sub micron sizes. The good thing about silica and the larger contaminants is that they rapidly settle to the bottom of the storage vessel and that portion of the oil can be returned to the recyclers or used for heating. Many people still think that it will scour away the fuel pump cylinder walls but think about it, What could have higher lubricity than oil? Another good thing about WMO is that most people change their oil long before it's TBN is used up thus keeping useful antioxidants, detergents and metal conditioners in the fuel source. Even if this were a harmful product to put through the engine, after ten tanks I have paid for a new IP, and after 30 tanks(6 months) a new engine.

I'll have to give that some thought then. I'm certainly not adverse to a recycled fuel source, at least if it is reasonably safe to use and as easy (or easier) than biodiesel. Right now, the availability for bio is getting me down, but I can think of plenty of oil quick-change shops that I might be able to get some from, plus the parts dealers have their own dumpsters.

How small are you filtering? I always figured on sub-10 micron was a safe place, and for my diesel Jetta, it ran perfectly on biodiesel down to that low.

Also, what about the possibility of synthetic oil in the mix? Does that burn at all?

At present since most of my better filtering supplies are in storage I am using the jean filter gravity method into a barrel, then I pump thru a 5 micron canister filter on the transfer pump into my fuel tank. I am saving the pennys from my fuel savings to buy a centrifuge. I have in mind a system which may possibly work better than the Spincraft type centrifuges commonly used for WVO.

Synthetic Will burn just fine. The cumbustion temps inside the cylinder are 800-1800 degrees fahrenheit or higher. Remember that even if motor oil has a higher flash point than D2, the cumbustion is going to be initiated by the component with the lowest auto-ignition temp which is the 25% D2 present in the mix.

Interesting, although I thought even when I was adding small amounts of 2 cycle oil to the tank this winter I thought it hampered performance a bit and took a bottle of red line, another bottle of BG244 and a couple tanks of B20 to clean it all out. But there is probably a similar amount if not more of WMO produced in this country as there is WVO. I do love how the diesel can be a garbage disposal of sorts though.... While I'm sure the emissions would severely suffer, I need to research how WMO is recycled currently...

The vast majority of it is burned in power plants, some is recycled into motor oil again, some is used in road construction as a thinner in the asphault mix (ironicaly it is illegal to use it for dirt road dust control in most states now), some is used in waste oil furnaces for shops and factorys.

MOST of the WMO in the North East is burned AT the oil-change location (shop) in waste oil burners in the cool months. Cosmo, I'm guessing that you have an in at a garage. Sometimes you can get it a bus garage...they change so much that they don't burn it.

The same bunch of cheap yankees that work with me to burn WVO in home heating furnaces also burn WMO. Basically, we'll burn anything that isn't nailed down.
