I have no problems with my rustys. Rear shocks needed a washer and everything was fine. I went with rancho struts all the way around love the ride and fit 245/75/16 without pounding down my pinch weld.

So, did anyone measure the OME spring height before installing them? If what you guys are saying is true, then the OME spring should be 3" taller than stock springs.......hmmmm so are they 3" taller sitting on the ground next to a stock post lowered KJ spring?

Actually no, you're incorrect, at equal spring rates it would have to be longer. However with a higher spring rate a coil can give more "lift" with a SHORTENED length than a LENGTHENED coil with stock spring rate. This is an extreme case in differences of spring rate however. It just depends on how the weight of the jeep compresses the coil. For instance a 500 lb spring will not be compress as far as a 250 lb spring by a given weight.

Here is a problem that I think stinks, and may be why Rusty's is going the way of RRO in customer service:

If YOU know how to fix the problem, and YOU can do it for $2, how come Rusty's still sells this kit that the end-user must modify to work? I am sure that they could fix it for a few cents, if that is the only problem and they correct fix. But they refuse to do so. If they are doing this, what else about the kit is just as messed up?

Amen Brother InCommando!!  One of the reasons that I do not deal with Rustys on anything is their total lack of caring about what they sell. I started looking at lifts in August 2004, at that time it was said that Rustys springs will sag over time and the rear shocks would not bolt up tight with out washers etc. SO in 4 years nothing has changed at all, plus some other problems with them when I did try and deal with them. BUT the fact remains that this has been discussed a 100 times since I joined in 2004, people buy a Rustys and then say I am going to upgrade later?????????Makes no sense to me at all in doing anything twice and spending more money. BUT then I know that over 1/2 of the ones on here will be gone in a year to buy some little front wheel drive SO THIS IS WHY I WANT EVERYONE TO BUY OME, they will sell the parts cheap at trade in time to me and I can stock pile them for when mine gets 500,000 on it!!!

Thanks to INC, In Commando, Jcs7002 and others saying basically the same thing so at least I know I am not totally..... crazy

Thats why I want a measurement of a HD OME front coil out on the ground.

I agree that you will not compress a 500lb coils as far as a 300lb coil, but if they are equal lenght then you will not get "lift" from the 500 LB coil, just not as much sag.

kj...ever jacked up your KJ?

Ever notice how the wheels drop when you do so?

Let the jack down...watch how far up the wheel goes in relation to the vehicle. Spring rate will make it go up in relation to the vehicle LESS, therefore providing lift.

Thats what I just said....less sag. When you let the tire down, you are loading the suspension. Now spring rate will effect the loaded height, thats to say that the truck will sit higher than a truck with less spring rate. But that doesn't mean you gain height, it means you don't drop as far on full load(vehicle weight). The only way to gain height is more spring material.

You have 2 springs of equal lenght but diffrent rates, then the lower rated spring will sit lower

You are starting to come around, actually saying the right things, such as the lower rated spring rate will sit lower, but above you say that the only way to gain heighth is more spring material. Which is wrong to a point. I take take two springs the exact same length but one 500 lb the other 300 and the 500 will give me more lift. period!

AND I NEVER WANT TO BE SAGGY AND CRUSTY

yes and that is where OME gets its lift b/c when I was installing mine I set the OME and OEM side by side and height wise not much difference but when I stood on them both the OEM went down and the OME barely even moved

I understand what kj924 is saying, but I think it is just semantics at this point. Tom says lift, and kj924 says less sag. They are the same thing.

kj924 so you wanted to know my heighth from ground to flare (which by the way is not the right way to measure but heres a 1000 word picture.) I have 255-70X16s which is a roughly 30 inch tire. Now how do you compare to this picture? What size tires etc.?

Exxxxxaaaaaactly Mike. Springs of the same physical height will not net you vehicle lift.

What do the import drivers do to their Honda Civics...lower them. And how did they first lower them? cut a coil off the springs

back off course there again, thought you had it, by cutting a coil off of a stock spring yes you are lowering it, you still have the same spring rate but it is shorter now and lowerbut YOU can have two springs the same heighth and one give you more lift     Maybe you have it and just not explaining it the way it should be

Oh man...this is bordering on the sublime now. That actually depends on the type of spring.

Do me a favor tom and measure one of those OME you have lying around there and tell me the height of it. I will measure my stock one I just took out. This will be the deciding factor.

The thing is kj924, the rusty's springs and the ome springs are different rate springs so the compress differently. So, when your rusty's spring is compressed it goes lower that a ome spring would on the same kj, and the rustys have the same rate as the stock, so why not upgrade if you are going to replace them anyway.

Think of it like this: If you take a tomato and a potato and they are identical in shape and size, and you squeeze them both the tomato will squish first right? Well, the Rusty's are the tomato and the OME are the potato.

Now if we were discussing two sets of springs with identical rates they would compress the same on the same kj and they would be at the same height and give no difference in lift. But the springs in question are two different rates so one goes lower when compressed by the exact same amount of weight. Make sense?

:-)r       I like the tomato and potato explanation good one INC!!!!!

OME Heavy Duty 927 approx. 15 5/8 I think give or take an inch but still proves nothing. Yes I do have new ones just laying around the garage!

I can go all night to keep this thread going, but somewhere along the line I may have to start pulling out some old charts regarding true spring rates per inch on coil and leaf springs/ thickness/ number of coils per inch
