I need help! I have got a knocking sound in the front right wheel well. I recently changed the upper control arm so it isn't the Upper ball joint and the lower one still looks good. I have heard that it could be the rack and pinion or even the strut mount. I'm looking for ideas as to how to pinpoint the problem so I don't have to buy all new parts to find the problem. Thanks

did this issue happen befoe or after you replaced the UCA?

if after, I would re check your bolts and nuts to make sure they are tight enough. Sounds like something is loose.

You sure it's not the swap bar. Tighten those bolts to be sure.

Ha ha, very funny,
Yesterday after stopping into a local 4x4 place we came to the conclusion that the nut on top of the strut is lose so that means taking the whole thing out again. However we thought about possibly drilling a hole through the metal covering where the nut would be (between the 4 bolts for the strut assembly) and getting a socket down inside. Would this be a bad idea? or good one considering i wouldn't have to get a new alignment.

If you took the strut out and retightened it should not have to get another alignment due to not changing anything really, and would I drill down through to it? NO much easier just to yamk it out and do it right, an hour at the most and it will be done

But wouldn't I have to take apart everything that I did when I put the new coils and struts on? Could I get away with not having to take apart the sway bar link and other things to be able to get the room to be able to pull the coil and strut assembly out?

Seriously, if that top nut is loose, you're better off to bite the bullet and do like Tom wrote above. I sure wouldn't drill down to access it that way, that'd take a fairly large hole, and what if you're off by 1/4" or so?

Yeah, I wish that there was a hole to access that nut without taking it off. No need to compress the springs, they are already compressed. You better be right on or that hole is going to be huge!

No i won't drill the hole but won't I still have to take apart enough parts to require getting an alignment over again?

Theoretically you won't have to get an alignment after, because nothing is being adjusted. But it's your Jeep, so you need to make the call on that.

Most places will check their alignment if you take it back within a few thousand miles and say "It doesn't feel quite right." Usually for nothing.

But technically, as others have said, you've already had it aligned for the new geometry so you should be good to go.

Got in there and took out the coil and strut and found that the boot wasn't sitting right or atleast wasn't tight enough agains strut mount so I placed a washer in between them. Got it back in there and works and no more knocking.
