You see that design on a lot of TJ/CJ/YJ's. Why? Their doors go straight up and down, IF they have the doors on. Their sides also sit a lot higher than a KJ. The purpose of the sliders like RL's/AllJ's/Carolina are to slide on and keep the rock away from the doors. If you don't have the bars out away from the vehicle, the rocks will be able to come at your door.

how did you manage that? was it a set of rock rails?

I don't wheel my Liberty on trails like some of you do, that is the main reason I would like something more stock looking that still serves the purpose. I want protection, but I also want something that my wife won't have a fit about being on our daily driver around town vehicle. So this is one of those debates that shouldn't even be happening. It's what would best suit my needs. You can disagree all you want but it still doesn't change what I want and/or need.

I really don't remember mentioning any brands. But I have seen ones that hang under where these seem to be located. If I am seeing them correctly. Also I have not said I would buy these from any vender, I am really thinking about fabbing my own. I love Rock Lizard products and I bought my lift from them. I would probably buy much more if my TJ wasn't eating up all of my funds.

X2 here, except I sold my TJ.

and I forgot, X2 on what you said in your last post too KJ Taz. Plus, If I do wheel where I might hit my door, that is a risk I am willing to take. I just like the design better than the RL ones. Plain and simple. RL does make amazing products, doesn't mean that everyone and their mother has to use them. In fact I am waiting to hear from Marty when I can get my hands on a Riddler diff cover. I like to throw money his way (I bought my Frankenlift from him) because he is such a good guy, but some things I prefer to handle myself.

As far as bracing to prevent bending, I would ad some into my design when I fab my own up.

BTW: I laughed because from the sound of it, rocks in CO are tougher than rocks anywhere else in the country and apparently they "come at you".

well i can tell you.. here in PA our rocks dont move.. or have mercy on doors/rock rails. I've straightened my mopar rock rails with a full size frame machine (30,000lbs of pulling force) twice.. and they offer less protection for the doors and rockers than the design Incubusmike wants to use.. and they've still saved my rockers and jeep many times. often times rocks and stumps at your door can be avoided by a better line.. so if you want your jeep to look stock.. or just really like the idea no not being hung up on anything with the solid plating under there i would go with the new design. however when it comes time for better projection for me.. i'll go with the super skinks. to each his own.

oh and by the way.. fulltimer your jeep is AWESOME

RL step-skinks. Combination of mud, tree-root and a ravine. Slid into the ravine, just as I crossed over the muddy tree root. Came down on the root VERY hard. Didn't hurt the door or body at all, though.

2006 KJ: thanks for the compliment! :D I really like the looks of this new design and how it prevents loss of any clearence. For most of my wheeling I don't need super protection. But, I think I'll go back to my original idea of Super Skinks. Besides, it's better to support someone that supports us KJ owners.

Well, I officially started my mock ups of these rails. And so it begins. Going good so far, but I have yet to do any of the real work. Only a ton of measuring and some paper cutting first.

I don't know if I will use it for all of it, I think for the bottom pate I will, for the top strip, not sure and the corners, not sure as well. I am going to hit up a metal yard Monday and see what I can find there. I know a guy who found 3/8" diamond plate there in a 4' X 5' sheet or something like that, no joke. He got it for like $50 too. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Yeah, I hope I can find something like that kind of deal too. I don't expect to, so I plan on having a metal supply place make me the exact shapes and sizes I need. We'll see. It will still be pretty cheap even if I buy all the metal from the shop instead of scrap yard. The guys gave me a good deal on the little bit of metal I bought for my roof rack.

So, I hit a little snag on the rail project. I can't get the mock up to fit quite right without totally taking off the bottom paneling below the doors. I need to just suck it up and do it, but I don't want it to look like crap while I am working on the mock up. I got some advice on here of how to take off the paneling but haven't done it yet. I will be working on it pretty much all of tomorrow, so we'll see. I'll get pics of everything too.
