ALSO WITH E85 IT COMES OUT TO ABOUT 10 TANKS PAYS FOR THE ACTUALL MODUAL THAT YOU WOULD NEED AND THEN IT CONTINUES TO BE CHEAPER IN THE LONG RUN.

Here's the biggest problem with e85... Horrible fuel economy, average of 25% less MPG than with regular unleaded when the price is an average of 9% cheaper... People complain about MPG in their KJ's now imagine dropping from 16 to 12 MPG or 12 to 9... Fact is you will spend more money with e85 than reg unleaded since you have to gas up alot more often.

Until recently, my daily driver was a 1999 Dodge Caravan that was e85 compatible. I have used used it on and off for that past 8 years. As to whether it environmentally friendly or not, I cannot say. If like me, you are looking to save money, forget it. The money I saved at the pump was voided by the poor fuel economy I got with E85. I would say I spent slightly MORE when using E85. Considering that as a taxpayer, I was also subsidizing the producers, I would say it is economically infeasible.

Just my two cents worth.

Yeah but you'll be running 100+ octane... @ least with even 100% biodiesel or 100% WVO the energy loss in the fuel is just a couple percentage points.

Octane level does not dictate the "power" of a fuel or the potential mileage you will get while using it. Octane is the rating for the fuel's resistence to "knocking'. IF you can advance your timing far enough to take advantage of an increase in octance, you will see some benefit. But it is not that the fuel "makes more power." It is that it enables you to tune your engine differently. Running high octane fuel in a vehicle that does not require it is flushing money down the drain for the same reasons.

On a related note, I saw in the local paper where the nation's #1 producer of biodiesel is on the ropes due to poor sales. They have cancelled plans for a plant expansion and another new plant. I do not recall the name, but is was in the Pacific N/W.

Octane ratings are the resistance to igniting,it takes more comprssion, heat, and spark to ignite 91 octane then 87 octane.Higher octane, such as 116 octane ALCO race gas is not good for your 9.5:1 comprssion ratio street engine but great for those 12:1+ ratio race engines.Advancing timing has little to do with octane since nowdays you can't adjust timing anyways.

[quote="tjkj2002 Now come on,E-85 woeks and if the vehicle is outfitted properly there is no harm.Your CRD polutes more then a vehicle running E-85.I make money off of E-85,many do,I don't use it but it is very popular in my home town area since they recieve tax breaks for it.Get over it,it's just like your biodesiel, just a short term fix that hurts some and profits some.[/quote]

Now there's a mis-informed consumer... Our CRD's pollute about 25% less, liter for liter, than any gas motor. Now when you take into consideration I run 2.8 liters and you run 3.7 liters, my CRD emits about 33% less harmful emissions :!: As for you making money on it, will you deserve to make a living, but the government has no business cramming that crud down our throats when in the end it is more harmful for the environment. Global warming my stupid. Climate shift has be taking place for millions of years and will continue long after we are dead and gone. Are humans so full of themselves to believe they control the global weather??? It's all a huge money making ploy lead by the likes of Al Gore

Now can't we talk about four wheelin :?: PLEASE :!:

that may have been true before bio fuel research had really benn kicked up, An then it was just over 25% loss in economy. Now with the technology involved your maby looking at a tops of 9-11% percent loss and that would be in a massive motor. I have not figured all the numbers for things yet but so far im only looking at about a 3 to 5 percent loss. And i dont even think thats low enough. the only for sure thing i can say at the moment about the whole deal is this. E-85; at least in my area; is about 80 cents cheaper per gallon than regular gas. So even if I ws to get a 8% drop in milage it would still be cost effective to use e85.

http://www.edmunds.com/advice/alternativefuels/articles/120863/article.html

Granted gas prices have increased from last summer, but I'm surprised if e85 technology has jumped that much in less than a year.

http://www.fuelgaugereport.com/

Then current national average for e85 is only 67.8 cents cheaper than regular unleaded. About a 17% difference in price. Not enough to justify the real life drop of 25% of MPG. Even he proponents of e85 qoute a 17-20% loss of milage.

http://www.agriculture.com/ag/story.jhtml?storyid=/templatedata/ag/story/data/1147098565893.xml

Now if Gasoline continues it's upward rise (which it probably will, even though OPEC states hat oil should only be $60-70 per barrel right now.) e85 WOULD be come an economical alternative, assuming that it doesn't increase in price as well... Even e85 has increased over an average of $2.00 a gallon in the past 3 years.

Simple fact of the matter is that there are fewer BTU/gal in E85.

E85 has about 72% of the energy content of gasoline. So one engine running both will suffer a 28% loss in fuel economy.

Now where ethanol has potential, which has not been exploited, is in higher compression ratio engines. take engine A running regular gas at the top end of its compression ratio where it will not pre-ignite, now take that same engine, raise the compression ratio, and call it engine B.

Despite the fact that it has 28% less energy operating at a higher compression ratio means it will run more efficiently.

One of my grips about E85 is I have not seen proper implementation. Saab has come closest but it hasn't been widespread useage.

o deffintaly agree with the high compression. There are quite a few turbo'ed beasts that run e85 as cheap race gas. I don't know where I am from in So.Dak we have ethonal plants all over and you save over 1.30 a gallon thats over 20 bucks a tank and then 20 bucks can buy you 8-9 gallons more for the same price as a normal fill up. I really doubt that by running E85 you would lose over half your MPG. everyone that I have talked to around here that runs e85 says your get about 2-3 MPG differenace. I guess we will just have to wait and see how it is doing on C co Crusader 2/127 and then I think I will also make the switch. E85 is everywhere up here and just so much cheaper I dont know if gas goes over 4 bucks then I will deffintly make the switch.

Cool Jeep is selling flex fuel indy cars!

A flex fuel WK is a far cry from an indy car.

Hey C co Crusader 2/127 Just wondering how your E85 kit is working out and if you have lost any power or mpg? This looks like a sweet deal and if it really works I think I will be running the same setup. Let me know about any problems or what you really like about this kit.

C co Crusader 2/127 how is your E85 kit working out for you? I tried to pm but nothing is working. How far do you get on a tank and do you run just straight E85 or a mix?
