Does anyone know how to remove the plastic paneling below the doors on the bottom of the 2005 KJs? It is the piece above where rock rails protect. I am going to be making some custom rock rails like Rubigades, but I have no idea how to get that stupid plastic piece off so I can see what is underneath. I am also considering adding a bar that sticks out like a step, that can add more protection for the doors, and help my pregnant wife get in and out easier. Not sure yet if I will add it or not because I really want the integrated look but it has its positives. Please help. :D

On my 2004 I just yanked it off when I installed my rock rails. I was held on by plastic rivets. I may have broken a rivet or two off, but I wasn't planning on reusing it.

Yeah, I know the bottom is held by plastic bolt thingys, but the top appears to be held on by a really thin strip of two sided tape. Just like my OEM plastic crappy tail light guards. I don't really wanna just rip it off, but I guess I won't be using it.

You can slip a thin, flat screwdriver under the head of the plastic rivit things and give it a good hit. That should cut it off. You can always get new ones if needed.

So basically, it is rip it off or nothing else huh? I kind of wanted a way to take it off and look at it and then slap it back on right after. :?

Well, I haven't taken the panel off yet, but I mocked up some paper cut outs of what I need to build the rails. So far I have a close to exact match for the ends of the rails, all the angled pieces. I hope it turns out good. I am also looking to mount it differently than Rubigade. I want to use the 6 mounting points I already have for each side and maybe still do the metal screws on the top too. We'll see.

kskj: so you used a screwdriver and just pried on the plastic rivets and they popped out? And then they went right back in? This may be the answer I was hoping for.

Yeah, on the bottom. It doesn't really cover it up, as much as sit in front of it on my 05, but I think you are thinking of the right one. This is where I got the idea and it will show you what piece of plastic I am replacing with steel. http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... rock+rails

Those are my two cents, I am not trying to be mean, just fortunate for what I have!

But yeah it will look awesome if you make a set like Screamin' Lizards (I think that's who originally made those) on your KJ and then you can make and sell!!!!

I'm trying not to be too cookie cutter with my kj. Yes the rock lizard are great, but I don't want them.

Im with you on that, plus if you do your own custom work your KJ will be a one off and no one will have one like it

They pop right of, if you break any of the plastic rivets and you feel the need to put them back on like I did you can buy replacements. One more thing, RRO really makes nothing we need, but one thing, check out their Rock sliders for the KJ, I have them on mine, Will post pictures soon .
