Ok - I know it was stupid, and I didn't read the fine print until it was after the fact,
but I allowed Jiffy lube to do my fluids. Dang my laziness. They put in Dexron + the "additive"
to "make it ATF+4". and they put in some universal ATF into the transfer case -
I didn't see this until too late. So, what do I do now? How bad is this really?

I can't speak about the Dextron + additive for the transmission, but the transfer case does take universal ATF.

ATF+3 = dino tranny oil---still dino oil with the additive package and will not conform to ATF+4 standards.
ATF+4 = full synthectic tranny oil with special additives
Amsoil = full synthectic

You need the ATF+4/Amsoil in the KJ's tranny due to the tranny being designed to use that specific fluid. The t-case does not matter, they just state to use ATF+4 as the tranny does so why not keep it the same.

So if I can get the tranny fluid changed - and filters of course -
within a few days, have I done any harm to the unit driving it
for a week with this substandard stuff in it?
Thanks for your advice by the way.

You can even get ATF+4 at Wally World, why not just use it?

It should not do any damage short term.

Just get it properly flushed at a dealership and make sure they use ATF+4.

This thread is the one reason I take my KJ to the dealership and pay my $240 to get the correct parts(fluid and filters) and be done with it.I would do my own tranny flushes but $4000 for that good flush machine is just kinda out of my budget for something that would only get used about once every 2 years.Plus having it done at a dealer gets you a 12 months/12,000 miles warrenty on parts and labor for work done at that visit, worth the little extra $$$$ to me.

And the Jeep dealer I go to now knows not to look at anything else, touch anything else,or recommend anything else since they now I do all my own work besides the flush and won't listen to them anyway(I actually told them to shut up the first time they tried to sell me anything else besides what I was there for).

How can the Amsoil fluid possibly beat the ATF+4 standards if they had no idea what the ingredients or additives were??

There is no proof anywhere that Amsoil will make a transmission "last longer". WHY would anyone take a chanceon a fluid that was NOT designed by the engineers who built your transmission? It makes absolutely no sense to me, just my opinion.

Keep in mind the engineers don't design the fluid, they design the transmissions and know that the transmissions need fluids that meet certain specifications in order to run.

Now the oil and lube companies, like Amsoil, follow industry standards established for each grade of oil/fluid. As long as their product meets with the standards set up (such as ATF) then it can be used in any transmission that requires fluids for those standards. In the case of Amsoil, they designed their product to meet or exceed the standards for all ATF fluids.

Of course that doesn't mean the dealership won't try to refuse your claim, they just hope to find people who believe them 100% and won't question them.
