Hey all-

I bought a 2003 Sport Liberty about a month ago. I posted about a problem I have been having with my KJ herehttp://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=32890&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
whats strange is only SOMETIMES does the jeep not move forward/backwards when i let go of the brake w/o applying gas. sometimes the thing moves like its a torquey v8 and hardly needs a gas pedal. grr, so frustrating..

now today i was backing out of a parking spot, turned my tires fairly sharply threw it in Drive, depressed the gas and the motor died. sucked.

what do i need to look in too? any ideas?

on a cold start running high idle mine'll pull, when it's warmed up and low idle no pull

The rolling or non-rolling is normal for the 42RLE transmission and the funky torque converter that Chrysler used for the KJ. Depending on what transmission you have in your Liberty (see note at the bottom), this could be totally normal behaviour for your truck. The best thing you can do is have a transmission mechanic pull the trans pan and inspect the insides for excessive wear and tear, which will help you determine the previous owners mantience habbits. If it's very dirty - you best leave it alone and don't flush anything out. If it's clean, than you should be OK with switching the filters an fluid. This might help, but not solve your problem.

The stalling: If you had the wheels cranked to the stop on the powersteering rack, the added strain on the belt drive system could have been what caused you to stall out. However, if you want to try the key trick [turn the key on, then off, repeat 3 times] for a code check - the computer might have something stored in there for you.

Also, what maintence have you performed so far? You might as well put yourself on a clean slate by changing out all of the fluids (save for the transmission - find out what it looks like first) and then replace the spark plugs.

Note: The 45RLE was used from 2002 until April 2003 on the Production line. The 42RLE took over mid April 2003 and has been in the KJ since. The 42RLE is a fine transmission and is proving itself very useful in the KJ.

Where did you find this info? I'm thinking it may not be accurate: my KJ has a 42RLE, built Feb 2003.

There might have been some early samples of the 42RLE that went down the production line before April. Another Thread discussing this same inforamtion

I had always believed the cut off was April 03. But maybe between December 02 and April 03 there was a mix of 45RLE's and 42RLE's being used?

Edit: Filter Info from the FAQ section Not that this one is too much help

Thanks sleeve. When it boils right down, I wouldn't know the difference performance-wise, because I've only ever driven one KJ. This tranny has always done what I've needed it to do, and never been any problems. So I'm happy with it. :)

So without me starting a new thread, can I replace the black cap that reads "dealer use only" with a tranny dipstick from an 03-06 liberty? I work in a shop and have the ability to do my own trans fluid changes, but its a tad hard to tell how much is in there without a dipstick, and the dealer tells me there is NO dipstick for the 07 tranny.

You sure can. I am not sure about any changes made to the dipstick between 06 and 07 but someone else might chime in with that information.

Also - the Mopar cataloge or the dealer partshop should have the 07 dipstick available for order.

Edit: Here's a great thread on the whole dipstick debate. It even lists the part number to order and what it cost last year: Clicky

Correction it's a 45rfe not rle. Dropping the pan wont really allow any type of inspection other than seeing if there is any metal in the bottom of the pan.

Unless you want to check out the valvebody, otherwise you need to pull the tranny and tear it fully apart to inspect the condition of the inards.

Aren't metal shavings the primary cause for concern in the tranny?

But where did those metal shaving come from?

probably the transmission?

Edit: meaning that any excessive amount of 'gunk' buildup in the transmission pan would indicate poor service history. Metal flake and clutch residue tend to settle on the pan floor if the equipment isn't well mantained.

Also - if the transmission hasn't been taken care of. Don't start changing anything out now. Flushing away all of the material build up can cause leaks and remove that floating "clutch" material that was holding your transmission together.

My point was that you need to know where those metal particales are coming from, the tranny may still be salvageable. It's always worth a look then buying a $3000+ tranny.
