I think we need a Hybrid soon. I didn't search since I am currently at work but does anybody know if Jeep is working on a new Hybrid? I noticed they have a concept but nothing concrete. A Hybrid Liberty would be great. I am just finally getting interested in looking into converting one of my vehicles to a Hybrid or electric only car. I do honestly think that if Jeep cant come up with a Hybrid by the time I am ready for a new Jeep then I may have to go to Toyota. But I love my Jeep so much!

Honestly, I'd really like to see hybrids become a thing of the past. They're not that much better on fuel mileage, and the cost of replacing the batteries isn't worth it. We've only got so much oil to burn anyway. We might as well use it all up and spend time developing an economical hydrogen fuel cell. Hybrids, and Ethanol are not only non-sustainable, but they're both bad for the environment.

What would you do on the trail if you're wheeling, and your gas enginer shut off because the computer determined you only need battery power. You'd be boned.

We need more vehicles like the new Honda FCX Clarity.

They're always the Ford Escape hybrid.

Ford...no thanks. Been there...got boned on that. If anything I would go with a Highlander right now. Never heard of the Clarity...will look into it. Wow...600 a month for the Clarity? No thanks...thats taking everything I pay in gas...tripling it and adding it on to what I pay now for a vehicle. Price needs to come down before that is even remotely viable for the average driver.

Diesel hybrids, thats the ticket. 30% less carbon footprint than gas hybrids. Actually I wouldn't go with a hybrid, I think once everyone realizes what environmental mess the battery recycling is going to cause, they will drop them from their lineups.

I'm waiting for diesel electrics and natural gas to prove the most cost effective and efficient vehicles out there for long distances. For everyday use the pure electric that you plug in at home fueled by abundant nuclear power, just need to advance the state of battery technology again.

I know its only a pipe dream, the oil companies will never let it happen. Look what they've done to diesel prices.

If I may throw in my .02, I think we should start drilling in American territories, build more refineries and tell the darn Arabs to go p*ss up a rope! Then none of us will have to worry about outrageous fuel bills anymore, or at least for the next several hundred years. The Earth will make more oil, it had to come from somewhere to begin with...

This is way off topic, but anyway :D . I'd have to look back at my notes, but IFRC there was a scientist that proposed that exact theory a couple of years ago (before current crisis). He was even going to present to a prominent oil industry symposium. His invite got canceled when they learned what the content of his presentation. His argument was that based on industry estimates, the oil reserve in the gulf of Mexico should be close to being tapped out, but the wells there continue to produce and the quality of the oil has improved over time. He claimed that either the original estimates were seriously flawed or the reserve was refilling from an undiscovered reserve or the most likely reason was that the earth was regenerating the oil.

Wouldn't that change the world :!: :D .

make a Hybrid or Electric Compass and I am there. May even go with the FWD version when the time comes for the next vehicle (if they still are making them then).
NO practical way to make a Hybrid or Electric Wheeler but for the daily driver, why not?

It took millions of years to make that oil out of vegetation. That plant life does not exist any longer. There is no way that the earth can make new oil. When it is gone...it is gone, period. The answer is not gas or anything like that. The gas is made from decomposing matter also. People in our early history thought that the endless miles of trees would give us here in this country, wood forever. Just go cut more. That type of thinking just don't make it. Like it or not electricity, produced by nuclear fission, solar and wind are going to be that answer. Any way to produce it would work other than how we do it now. Batteries that are light weight and cheap and recyclable need to be developed for our cars.

Terry........off the soap box.

Actually DryBones there are electric motors that put out over 200 HP. I will try and look up the site I found it on and post it later. But I know the torque is pretty good on it as well. They just dont last long on the battery. That is why it would be best to improve battery life.

A month or two back, petersen's 4-wheel and off road talked about the concept of the new jeep rubicon, It was a diesel hybrid. The basic idea is that it uses a small 2 cylinder diesel engine the operates at its most efficient RPM to recharge the batteries. It has about a 45 miles range on a single charge, not using the engine. And when combined with the engine could achieve 110 MPG.

It used lithium ion battery packs, and a 1.5L blutec diesel engine.

This kind of hybrid is already in use in the marine industry and is working very well on the Lagoon 42.

Not only does it have excellent economy, but with a high torque motors on each wheel hub, there is more than enough power, and no worries about running out of electricity. Also think of what this means in terms of a camping, or in an emergency vehicle offering a great deal of 110V 220V.

Now they just need to get serious about it.. everything looks good on paper...

I think they not only need to get batteries to a point where they last long enough but get alternators to a point where they can constantly charge the same amount or more than what the vehicle uses. Granted the oil companies will never allow it but...imagine an electric car that would never need gas at all or need any kind of recharging and could drive indefinately.

I agree, but it seems that almost every attempt I've seen at making a perpetual motion device has failed miserably. But when considering Einsteins theory of relativity, energy can not be created, nor can it be destroyed, which makes it seem that a vehicle like you mentioned should be very possible. It just simply needs to harness the energy that it is putting out to propel the vehicle.

OR we could just go back to the Flintstone's style of transportation

I like McCains incentive money. That should really push for more research and improvements for batteries. This country is too spoiled with it's waste of fuel. Go get a motorcycle, scooter, bicycle and ride. Preferably bicycle to help lose the fat that makes this country the fatest and laziest. Look at the other countries and how they use the two-wheeled vehicles and public transportation. We waste fuel by having a single driver in Suburbans, Denalis and Escalades going to work.

Think about your kids and their kids and so on. When we use up all the oil and wipe out the rain forests, what then? You can't replace those in a few lifetimes.

This planet is Billions and Billions of years old. Try to fathom that and how long it took to create what we have today. Look at what we have destroyed since mankind took over. The planet will survive, but we won't.

Perhaps we should nuke half the world's population so we can start over.

Anyways, back to Jeep Hybrids........a waste of time. Hydro-Jeep. Make water, not fumes.

Jeep...............Hybrid...........= big no-no
Jeep...............full electric..........With current battery tech = VERY BIG NO-NO

My opinion but until they can improve battery tech to withstand very harsh terrians(rock crawling) and last at least 300miles on a charge it is not a viable choice for a Jeep that is going to be taken off the pavement.Even a hybrid won't stand up to much abuse, wouldn't matter anyway cause it would be all torn out anyway from being to weak to handle low range gearing and the abuse it could see.

Now a pavement pounding car is a better choice for hybrid/full electric tech.

Forget perpetual motion. It's pure myth. However, when I worked for ALCAN we were developing AIV (Aluminum Intensive Vehicles) with Ford and GM. They brought some of the GM cars to the plant to show off and a friend of mine drove one. He was used to driving the electric buggies we used at work. With them you push the gas to the floor to go. He punched the gas and smoked the tires until he let off. They have plenty of torque.

A few specs that I recall on that car:
0-60 in 8 seconds
over 100 miles per charge
an 85% quick charge took 15 minutes (The plan was to have quick chargers at gas stations)
a modified version had gone close to 200MPH (around 180 I think)

And these were pretty heavy cars... around 3,000 pounds...

I think you're missing the point, the more trash we bury now the more oil we'll have in a billion years!!! :x
