Do the M-bolts flex when tightened down, or should I crank down nuts until it stops turning? I snugged them up well enough with 1/2" wratchet, but didn't want to crank down and possibly snap off. Another dumb question: Why are they M-shaped?

Do you not have the directions? They are supposed to be torqued down to spec.
They are "M" shaped so you can get them through the holes. No way to get a bolt with a head anywhere in there.
I will get the torque numbers for you in 10 mins or so. I am at work.

Does this help you? http://jeepkj.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29219 When you installed tow hooks w/m-bolts, did you put the short end of m-bolt in front or back? The pictures are unclear.

First off the reason there is a short end and a long end is so you can use the long end to hold it and thread it through the fram holes. So short end first.

Second, the M bolts do close a little when tightened. If and or when you try to take them off and re-install them you will notice thewy are a bit closed and not wanting to go back through the holes as before.

I put my hooks on a few weeks ago, I put the shorter end up front the clearance was less & made it easier. I have not been able to get my torque wrench in there either. So I just snugged them up & checked again after a few days & all was ok.
