ABC News did a special on aged tires, and the potential danger of using them.

Anyone and everyone should see this video, which shows you how to tell if the tires you're using are new or old.

http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4826897

If a moderator can sticky this to this section, that would be awesome.

Also, if anyone can find a way to save this video and keep it on the server, that would be great. I don't expect that ABC News will keep it on their website for very long, and would probably not archive the story. I tried using keepvid.com, but it didn't seem to work. Maybe someone who is more tech-saavy can do it.

(sorry, but I posted this before I checked to see if anyone already posted about it. I don't think the previous thread had the video link though.)

OK, so that was an eye-opener for me. Course, I ran out and checked the Grabbers: oldest one is 2 1/2 years old, youngest one is just over a year old, and it's been on the KJ for several months. My Nokian Hakks are a bit older: 23rd week of 04. I'll get another winter out of them and that's about it....

Thanks, I appreciate this information!

This is good information. I found out recently that TireRack won't mount tires that are older than 5 years. I would assume that they make sure they don't sell any older than 5 years too, but who knows.

Buyer beware, eh?

It's really sad when you think about it though.. All of those tires have a shelf life say 5-7years and then they need to be discarded if they aren't installed and used. But where do you discard brand new tires to?

My Trailer gets a new set of tires every 3 years and this fall I'm swapping out the tires on my wifes car just to be safe. It's better to spend some money, in my eyes, than get stranded on the side of the road somewhere trying to put the spare tire on.

LOL. This really makes me laugh.

The guy said the tires on his van that his son died in were 4 years old when he bought them. They were 9 years old when they were done for...

Did he look at his tires for signs of dry rot? absolutely not.

Also, the guy that showed the tire that was 14 years old...if he knew what he was talking about, he'd know it was 24 years old. So this industry expert doesn't know anything in the first place. for 3-digit date codes, there's a triangle at the end if it was made in the 90s. If there's no triangle, you have to guess whether it was made in the 70s or 80s. There was no triangle...so, my guess is '84.

Sucks to have these uninformed self-proclaimed experts educating everybody.

The majority of the time, UV exposure is what causes an old tire to go bad, which sets off a red flag about the tire rack outside this service station where Mr. Cheapskate bought his tires. If it's sitting in a climate-controlled warehouse with no exposure to sunlight, it'll be fine. I've got 4 year old tires on my KJ, and it doesn't bother me. I'll run 10 year old tires, as long as there are no visible signs of dry rot.

i get my tires from a wharehouse. they just sell tires and rims. you should see this place. you go in to get your tires, pay for them then they give you this paper, you go out of the office and give it to these guys with a motorised cart with trailers then he disapears into the long hugh maze of tires. comes back with your tires in a min or two. the place is about the size of home depot maybe two. i'll bet ya a single tire there dosent stay in there longer then 6 months before its sold. but they also sell all over the place. truckloads come in and truckloads go out.
