You say you want a drain plug "to check " the fluid , if thats the case then just use one of the siphon pumps and remove some to look at. Not sure why some are taking this thing so serious. Anyone that wheels out in to water, mud, even out on rocks wants to check everything out good after a weekend of fun. Taking the diff cover off is a 3 minute job, not a big deal..

And taking the drain plug off to check the fluid thats like taking the oil pan plug out to check the condition of your oil, so you are going to take out the plug let some run out and then reinstall the plug??? Doesn't make sense to me at all.

Blanket statements about "laziness" and "true off roaders" in a thread about diff covers is not necessary. Opinions are one thing but when you make statements like above you are looking for trouble.

A drain plug makes draining the majority of fluid easier than dealing with all of that fluid coming out all at once. Once the fluid is nearly stopped, remove the cover completely and let the rest drain. Just remember, not everyone has a huge drain pan to collect it all at once when doing just a cover removal. If I can make it easier to have less of a mess, I am all for it.
