hi,
after some input on whether or not we could fit LT235/85R16 with a 2.5" lift and happy to make some modifications... if so what would they be... the tyre i'm looking at is recommended by a friend who's using them on his defender.

Look up Moose's posts. There has been quite a bit written about this tire size. The narrow width seems to be a plus on running them. They seem to be a good choice.

Not much of an issue, Pinch Weld, Trim the Bumper and inner wheel well liner, possibly relocate the washer bottle. Watch the Backspacing on the rims too.

2.5" lift, you got more than that my friend  . Jenko tried them and decided not to do it, another bloke in Melb tried them and sold them. You will have a bit of work to do mate and then still have some problems. However I'm sure that if you wanted to you could make it work as others have.

Hey CD :)
i can see another bash and smashem day coming ;) i was liking the idea of running 85's as it'll give that bit more clearance, but we'll see, still going to be a little while before i change tyres but looking at all the options.

Cheers
Stephen

Spoke to Jenko today, he want's to do his pinch weld soon so I told him to come over when we do Ed's lift (next few weeks). You should come over, we can do your's at the same time if you like, and if he still has his 235/85/16's we can chuck them on for size.

The pic is from the infamous "Crack" aka "golden crack" aka "the crack" on the Gold Bar Rim Trail in Moab, UT. There are tons of youtube videos of people crossing this obstacle.

As far as the tire size my answer is "yes and no". These tires are great because they maximize ground clearance, require minimal trimming to allow for full stuff and when deflated to 15 psi, do great in the rock and sand I encountered when I lived in Utah.

Now that I live on the tip of our nations phallus (Ft Lauderdale), going off road usually means a lot of mud and general muck. When it comes to mud, there are two schools of thought.

One is the skinny tire is good because it cuts through the mud easily to find traction on the terra firma underneath. In the swamplands around here, you need a 38" tire minimum to do that in many places. Since my tires are only 32" and my diffs would explode trying to turn anything larger than the 32", I sink and get stuck.

The other is flotation. Get a nice big footprint and float along the top of the mud. I am considering giving up some ground clearance and going with a 31" x 10.5" tire to give me better floatation. The tire I have now measures 32" x 9.25".

The 235/85R16 MTRs are an excellent choice that can conquer anything up until the mud gets deeper than 16". At that point, it's all about the winch, but that's another topic.

i'm not that big on Mud, prefer the beech or bush (sounds like a do a lot of similar driving to what you used to do in Utah) ... so if i understand you right there are no issues with the tyres themselves and they perform well, i think this is what i was trying to get from you.

cheers mate

I ran this size on my KJ until I traded it in on an Unlimited. I liked the tires so much t I got a set of KJ steel wheels and use them on the LJ for off-road/winter tires. Make sure you setup your bump stops and the stuffing should not pop your flares. You will loose a little articulation (in the stuff), but it does give the max ground clearance for a KJ.... Good Luck and post some photos of the results!
