I am planning to pick up a Garvin Sport Rack (part # 34020) in the next day or so. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how it mounts to the Liberty (2004 model). I have the factory rails that run the length of the roof, but no crossbars. Will I be able to mount the rack to the rails only? Does anyone know if I will need a special mounting kit for it? Lastly, does anyone have any experience with Garvin's cargo net? If there is a better net available somewhere else I would like to know about it... Thanks, James (thedeatons@hotmail.com)

It just clamps to the factory side rails. Everything you need is included with the rack.

As for the net, the Garvin one is ridiculously expensive. I just got a generic one with hooks and it works fine.

mOth - have you experienced any slippage/movement with those clamps while carrying a load? Did the clamps compress the factory rails? What do you think the heaviest load is that you've carried? Last question, where did you prucahse the rack? Thanks.

No movement at all. I'm pretty sure the factory rails would come off before the rack does. :) I've never taken it off, but I doubt it's compressed the rails. As you can see in the pic, there's a rubber coating on the clamps that grips the rail. You tighten it down with a couple of bolts. Trust me, it's solid.

I use mine mostly for camping/road trips, so it usually has a tent, a bunch firewood, etc up there. Occassional trips to the Home Depot, etc. :) Not too much weight, but this thing is tough. The weak point is probably the side rails on the KJ.

I got mine from National4WD up here in Canada. Garvin are US based though, so you're better off looking locally.

One thing to be aware of: it's pretty tall. 4" sides, plus a inch or so for the mount. With a 2.5" lift, plus the rack I just fit in my garage.

I've had the same rack for 3 years and have experienced no slippage.
You might want to blue down the end caps for the floor bars, as several of mine have come off and there is a small bit of rust inside a couple of them.
Last year, my wife, 6 year old son and myslef sat on the rack to watch the 4th of July fireworks, although I would not trust the KJ rails to support that weight while moving.
I'm planning to bolt my rack directly to the roof, which will lower the height & make it capable of carying more weight.
When I first got the rack, I noticed alot of wind noise coming from it at highway speeds. I don't hear it anymore, probably because of the road noise from the MTR's.

When you order the rack, make sure you purchase the one for the KJ, as the mounting kits are made for specific vehicles.
