OK, which one do you prefer....on the side using Thule Hull-A-Ports or flat on the roof rails? Thinking of getting a saddle for the front and rollers for the back as I may be adding a canoe to the floatilla :D

SINKs (Sit INside Kayaks) tend to do better on the HullAPorts. I have some friends that have those and they've experienced some hull flex when strapped down to just the rails.

Thanks Jaysus, that's exactly what I needed to see. The pic out the front window really helps. The visibility not as bad as I thought it would be out the front window, but somehow I had envisioned (having never done it before and just guessing) the canoe being more forward/centered over the whole jeep. Not knowing how that was going to look was affecting/holding up my decision on purchasing a canoe over a certain size, since I'd like the 16' or 17' footer.

Also, that is a sweet canoe! I'm jealous!

It's a jeep thing, my levels of perception are sufficient to ascertain your implication

LOOK UP "EIDE".
for about $150, they make a one-man boat/canoe loader that resembles the bar thingy in 2nd pic in 2nd post here. uses a motor clamp-like thingy on a post which fits into a trailer hitch. you're sig says you got a renegade, use the plastic/graphite roof rack cover to give a little lift up front.
i carry an 18 ft canoe on lib/rene with it, only 2 tie-downs in front and one over the middle with the eide loader/holder in the back- and it truly is a one man operation!
55 mph is no problem with this set up- though i've never gone interstate to test faster...
oh yeah, i have a flat/square stearn canoe- if yours isn't you'll have to rig something for the clamp to hold to.

The "car-a-boat" is an interesting idea except the clamps would not work for kayaks ... hmm ... I'll send them email and see if they have clamps that would work for kayaks.

I purchased Yakima low rider mounts and the 58" Yakima cross bars. I haul my 14 foot canoe many places. I am sure the 16 footer would be a non issue. As far as visibility, you don't even notice it. It's well above your "road" field of vision.
Yakima part # are;
Low Rider Mount- 8000114
58" Cross Bars- 8000409
Gunwale Brackets- 8005007
Bow & Stern Lines- 8004031
Heavy Duty Straps- 8005006
Shop around online and you can get some decent prices. I then took those prices to the local dealer and he almost matched them and beat them when you added shipping :!:
I have carried my canoe on very rough trails and at 80 mph on the highway!
The picture below was on top of Ossipee Hill in Maine.

I have the same setup on mine (minus the fancy yakima rope...) the gunwale brackets do work really well and are compatible with any 1" round rack system. I recommend them to prevent side-side movement. Also, I get better mileage with a canoe. It actually IMPROVES the aerodynamics of the KJ at highway speed over unladden

That is very cool... I just had one question/concern - if you look at jaysus's picture of his 18' canoe on his KJ, it sticks WAY out the back. Using this system it would seem that the canoe would be more closely aligned with the back of the KJ, meaning it would stick WAY out front, unless you just used the loader to get it up there and then moved the canoe back?

Dave

I moved mine so it was a little closer to centered but not so far off-center that it would tip forward if not tied (for that very reason). As long as you have it tied securely at both ends, it's fine either way. It's a two person job regardless, so mount it up there in the safety of your driveway or street and then mark the hull with some duct-tape to know where you want to line things up in the field. Those big old-towne's are too much for one person. Don't be me and herniate a disk (literally) trying to heft if by yourself and don't forget to put a brightly colored marker-flag on the stern if it sticks out more than a couple feet. Smokey's will get ya in some states. Happy paddling!
