Our 06 CRD with 25k displayed its first check engine light to us (we are the second owners-4 monthes). The little CRD has been running great and continues to run great now with the check engine light on. Do I have to take it in to the dealer to find out what fault code is showing? Is there a tool that you can buy that can read the fault code ? What is the most common fault code to come up when your CRD is running fine ? Any ideas ?

My CRD warranty was voided when I purchased it in the USA and then brought it home to Canada, so if I don't have to deal with the dealer, I would rather not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !!!

Stop by your local parts store and pick up a code reader. Tell us what the code is and we may be able to tell you what to look for.

autoZone, Advance Auto, most other auto part chains will come out to your vehicle and read the codes for you no charge.

There's also a manual ignition key trick you can do to make the ODO show codes for you. Depending on which year you have there are sequences which will show codes.

With the engine off:

Switch ignition key like this: ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON-OFF rapidly (within 1 or 2 seconds) or go ON-ACC-ON-ACC-ON-ACC-ON-ACC-ON-ACC.

It's like raping your ignition, and I suggest you bring a piece of paper. Memorize the codes as they will be displayed fast, then write them down, and come back online to tell us which ones you got.

Easiest thing might just be the autoparts store with a code reader though :)

That feature has been eliminated on the US 05/06 CRD's on one of the flashes along the line

I bought an OBD reader from Harbor Freight for $40.

number--94169-3VGA.

My Saturn throws codes about 1 a month and I clear all.

PA requires emmission inspection by the OBD plug.

Money well spent.

Thanks guys for the replys!!

I will pick up a code reader on Wednesday. Where do they plug in ? By the sounds of it, they're a good thing to have.
I wonder if it will work on my 2008 Kenworth?

I will reply back when I pick up the code reader!

Thanks
Matt

Code reader will plug into the rectangular OBD port that is located just below the dash on the driver's side just to the left of the center console. No tools required and no covers to remove.

Hey guys,

I'm looking at buying a code reader / scan tool. I'm not sure which one I should buy. I'm assuming if you buy a cheap one, it will be junk. What are the protocol numbers for the Jeep CRD ? I just don't want to buy the wrong code reader and find out after the fact!

Thanks !
Matt

To me that sounds unlikely as I saw a video of the key trick done on a US model on youtube. It wasn't a Jeep KJ CRD but another Chrysler vehicle. Would Jeep then be specially modified?

My Harbor Freight code reader was initially recommended by another L.O.S.T member. I tried the Auto Zone and Advance Auto shops but their code reader did not have the CRD information.
