WHOA! I missed the kicker at the end of the article...

Quote:
Although American consumers are becoming more aware of environmental issues, they’re a long way from choosing vehicles for purely altruistic ecological reasons. “By and large most people believe that they have a right, a God-given American right, to drive whatever car they want and can afford,” says Dr. Charles Kenny, a psychologist and president of The Right Brain People, a psychology research firm based in Cordova, Tenn. “Americans still have a love affair with their vehicles, which are associated in their minds with freedom and independence.

Is the author implying that this is wrong? I happen to believe it is my right to drive whateter I want and can afford. My rights may or may not be God-given, but they were certainly paid for by soldiers. I'd like to keep them.

I saw a V-10 TDI filling up in Cheyenne WY at the Flying J on the south side of town. It was pulling a small camper and was being driven by an older couple. I don't remember what state the plates were.

Several Taureg TDI's in Portland, Oregon. I was behind one at the biodiesel pump at Jubitz a couple weeks ago.

Have a feeling that the # of them you see is proportional to the number of diesel/TDI/VW enthusiasts in an area.

I think what the guy was getting it is that back when gas was $2.00 a gallon and people were trying to encourage conservation through higher MPG standards, the response was "I am an American and driving a fuel pig is my god-given right." Now that gas is $4.25 a gallon, no one wants to own a fuel pig, but it largely has nothing to do with the environmental values.

Everyone's got a right to make the choice to drive whatever they want, but choices have consequences (we American's aren't very good at recognizing that). IMO, if the US automakers hadn't fought so hard to block any increase in MPG standards back in the 90's, they wouldn't be in as big of a mess today.

Defend our selves (Second Amendment), let those who do not believe this refuse antibiotics next time they have a bacterial infection, get more sick or even die.

We also have the rest of the Bill Of Rights given by God and not taken away by our Government.

Plus we have the right to not be stupid and own our CRDs.

Jeep and Diesel haters also have their right to be stupid and even drive their gasser Subarus off road if they want to.

Will they still hate Diesels when Subaru sells theirs in the US?

Or will Subaru be EVIL too?

OK, but how many Bentleys, Ferraris and Lamborghinis do you see? In my opinion, the V-10 TDI is also an exotic. Heck, even KJ CRD's qualify for rare status...

I don't disagree... I think the V10 TDI in that vehicle was a stupid idea, personally. Just VW doing a goofy technology piece, a muscle car SUV with a diesel (though I don't think it's much goofier than the Grand Cherokee SRT8).

Rumor on the VW boards is they are considering offering the Taureg II with the 3.0 TDI (same engine as in the Grand Cherokee and Mercedes). That's a much more interesting vehicle.

I'd settle for the German spec Passat with the 2.5L V6. I liked that car a lot.

If you still think that the Tuareg with diesel engine is a dumb idea after these articles, check your pants and make sure that you haven't lost anything important. I predict that it will win the 2009 Dakar rally.

Never said that. I said trying to make a 5500 pound Taureg into sportscar by stuffing a V10 diesel into it was a stupid idea. Putting a 3.0 v6 diesel into it is a different story.

FYI, the Taureg slated to race in the 2009 Paris to Dakar is using the 3.0 V6 TDI.

I don't know how big the wallet in your pants is, but I have no interest in fueling a V10 diesel that struggles to hit 17-18 mpg in a mid-sized SUV with fuel running $5 a gallon.

The V10 would be a great engine I'm sure, but I've always wondered why car makers don't use smaller displacement diesel engines more often. Think about how awesome it would be to have a small SUV with a little 2.8L turbo diesel in it. :)

Ha Ha. I get what you are saying about the size of the wallet, but I don't think that those who buy a $70000 vehicle are very concerned with the price per gallon of diesel (although real world drivers report 18/23 which is better MPG than many CRD owners report). Those who buy them get them for performance. There isn't another vehicle which has the range, can go 0-60 in 7.3 seconds and can tow 7716 Lbs in the kind of comfort and luxury that the Touareg offers. Surely you can't say that 310 hp and 553 pounds of torque under the hood doesn't make you drool just a little  .

I misunderstood your post earlier and thought your were saying that all diesel race cars were a bad idea.

FYI to your FYI. The 2009 Touareg is only rumored to be getting the 3L V6 for the race. It may still be getting the 2.5 5 cylinder which still makes it an awesome contender.

Carefull. Google map 'Chrysler Tech Center' and go west on Featherstone Rd, south on Squirrel and West again on Hamlin. Choose satellite view and look at the large building on the corner of Squirrel and Hamlin.

That's VW NA heaquarters. They're breathing the same air, drinking the same water...

Your word is good with me on the Googling....
This new information just gave me an idea.
Do you have any pull over at the VW headquarters or Chrysler ???
Try this one on for size....We pick out the best looking single gal in engineering over at Chrysler and the best looking single man in engineering at VW.
I send the VW man an email from, yup, you guessed it, the Chrysler gal...saying, "Oh I saw you from afar and maybe could we look at each other closer sometime..."
Come'on they're engineers....
He picks her up for lunch....IN a Taureg V10 TDI.....After lunch she says, "My what a wonderful suv you have Heinze. Did you design it ? That diesel engine is VERY impressive. SO powerful, just like you."
"We use many efficient diesels my dear...."
Then she says, "Do you mind if I use a few of your design high points over in my studio ??? AND by the way, that aftershave your wearing, is quite intoxicating. I get off at 5, how about dinner, be sure
and wear that after shave. And Hienze, maybe you should put a tooth brush into your pocket protector tonight......"
And BANG ZOOM....
We got Chrysler Group diesels that can be driven in North America.

Absolutely hilarious.

Unfortunately what probably happened was between two old german guys over a few of their national beverage...

'Ferdinand, how can we milk more money out of our captive partners?'

'Well Dieter, why don't I sell you some of my last generation engines, charge you double the market price, and you can tell them to put them in their cars?'

'But Ferdinand, I'm already doing that to them!'

'Come on, share the wealth Deiter...'

'OK, but only a few of them, we can't let the cow bleed dry. Hey, did you budget any entertainment for tonight?'

Seriously... :D ....VW did announce a 1 billion dollar manufacturing plant to be built in the US earlier this week and it sounded like it was pretty close to Chrysler facilities. Since Jeep is using the smaller displacement VW diesels in the Compass and Patriot in Europe and getting mileage in the 60's that portends well for the future of getting that product here me thinks.

Going to be built in Chattanooga TN,The city that I just moved away from. If only I had waited 6 months to sell my home. Property values have doubled overnight. UGG

My reaction to people who "need" a magazine or book to tell them what to buy is to keep drinking the kool-aid and leave the good doo doo for me.
