Transgo Shift kit.

How long does it take to do this job?
How much fluid is lost in this process?
Can you keep the drained fluid and re use it if it is new?

Is a gasget better than the RTV sealant when reasembling?

1)About 1 hour if you know what you are doing.
2)5-8 qts of ATF+4
3) I wouldn't,it's like drinking beer then when you piss you drink that cause it was beer.Good time to change the filters also.In other words......Don't be cheap, get new fluid.
4)RTV is much easier to use then the gasket,I have never had any problems with RTV,gaskets on the other hand are a royal pain sometimes.

Thanks tjkj2002,

I am trying to decide if I should have the kit put in by the tranny shop at $90 per hour, at the same time they are putting in the Suncoast, or if I should do the kit myself.

Now that you say it is relatively quick, at one hour for a pro, then I wil have them do it.

Bill

The TransGo kit I got from Suncoast doesn't look simple to install. It has a big snap ring that the instructions say needs to be installed in the clutch pack. To get to the clutches seems like WAY more than an hour job.

The guy at Suncoast said that it would be more than "a couple of hours" even for a professional.

Maybe I got a different kit or something.

I was thinking of the reprogramming 45RFE-HD2 $62 from Suncoast

the kit is does include something that goes inside the tranny, but is not needed for shift reprogramming, just "converter lock-up improvements" as stated on the suncoast site

see

http://liberty.eurekaboy.com/transgo.htm for his install.

I wonder if GMCTD has anything to add on this subject? Did you put this extra part in when you did the TC install?

That's some replacement springs for a tired pump - ours was 4mos old, prolly not very tired, so I did not pull the pump to install them - ifyou just pull the pan, install the accumulator rings'n'springs, prolly take you two hours from start to pouring the last of the ATF into the containers for disposal - wipe tha case and pan so they're dry of oil, wipe down several times with lacquer thinner to completely remove all ATF residue, use the black or gray RTV - clean up, go in the house, have lunch\supper, come back out, pour in the ATF, top it off and yer good to go - I usually leave it sit o'nite B4 filling the pan, make sure to get a good 'set' on the Room Temperature Vulcanizing rubber sealing compound - it's still not leaking

Thanks GMCTD.

Okay... the big ring included in the kit is for the Pump.

If the new, upgraded pump is being installed, then the Transgo big ring is not required, I take it.

The big snap ring replaces the tapered input drum snap ring which is known to be weak.It is optional as is the pump springs. The main part of the kit is the valve body parts and the resister.

Correct - the oem tapered snap-ring will easily fit into it's groove over the wide range of production tolerances - the Hemi crowd soon found that the taper would also slip outta the groove under high loading, so the flat ring replaces the slip-ring for hd usage - involves removing the pump, partial disassembly of the internal drivetrain to get to that ring\groove - not bad if the trans is already down for a new pump\tc

I saved the large snap ring and pump springs for when I do the TC and pump job in the future. Don't throw them away.

I'm considering doing this similarly: shift-kit, new filters and fluid now and new TC and pump when they die. I'm wondering, though, my mileage has dropped off a bit lately and it feels like the tranny is slipping more while driving. Will simply replacing fluid/filters/springs actually help or do I NEED to get a new pump and TC to really remedy the current problem?

I would say the last, everyone says the pump is different, the TQ may not be too much different, but you are right there, and
before warranty if you have a good relationship with your dealer, otherwise I would not drop it all just for the shift kit, unless
all of it is done.

Yeah, I just hate to go to the trouble of a fluid and filter change if the shifting hesitation is indicative of a larger problem. Economy is about 3/4 mpg less than the same time last year and dropped off rather suddenly. Have to break some eggs... just don't want to break them twice. Throwing money at it would likely fix it, but I sounds unpleasant to me :(

My history, I learn slowly, so I suck it up and try do it right and take the time to learn the differences.
I have been collecting parts, manual, etc. to do it all once and to get it right if at all possible.
To me with an '06 that means: T/C, pump, shift kit, new fluid and big cooler with thermal bypass valve.
Cooler, Filters and fluid are surprisingly price variable as was the transmission pump, T/C was expensive.
Not thrilled with the costs but hopeful the end results are worth it.

I've got an appointment to have my TC and shift kit installed on Monday.

I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I'm going to have them install the complete shift kit. Might as well, since they will have the tranny out anyway.

There is no difference between the original issue pump and the upgraded pump, itself - the modification is only to the front-half cover, removing the dual-seal collar by fly-cutting with a milling machine, which also requires replacing the main-case front shield\cover with a new version that seals directly to the TC drive hub - the 68RFE behind the Cummins 6.7L uses same pump with larger gears and no collar, but is not the upgraded pump for the 545RFE in the Hemi or the KJ CRD

The pressure passages in the pump are horizontal, which means that the springs wear on the bottom side due to gravity, weakening the springs over time - the Transgo kit supplies new identical-replacement springs for those worn springs to restore any pressure loss resulting from that wear - if the pump was previously upgraded but now has higher mileage, may help to install the springs from the kit

The Line Pressure resistor offsets the sensor so TCM responds with more pressure, which can help in the Hemi trucks with different final drive ratios and more mass to get moving - relieves the slushy shifts off the line - prolly a bit much for the lighter swb KJ if not heavily loaded, as in towing a tandem-axle rec trailer

The valve-body stuff is new accumuator seals\rings and several new springs with ugraded tension for better shifting - which TCM may decide you don't need and take it all away from you - TCM does that, don't you know - but, it does all seem to work better, speshully with the upgraded TC from the Hemi truck
