Coopers, ST-C or STT

hi Gents,
really a question for us australians so i posted here... pretty straight forward question, going to get new tyres and as CD is having heaps of trouble with his rims i'm going to keep mine until something that can be engineered is found. So on stock rims, my driving is mainly bush, with a bit of beach driving, not one for really doing bog holes and mud - unless ot blocks the track and i have to go through it.

Plans are to visit more of inland Australia and VIC highcountry.

ST-C

or
STT

and lastly the STT comes in a 255/70 as well as a 245/75,

which way should i go, and why? (help me understand)

mate

i am running the STT at the moment and i cant fault them they are actually pretty good on wet tarmac, they will wear a bit quicker than the ST-C but i can cope with an earlier replacement.

cmohr will pipe up soon he has done a LONG run with STT's

in a week or two i can pipe up with another brand of tyre

oh and come to fraser at the end of August for the annual lost Aus run

I run 265/75/R16 STT's on stock rims and have had no real problems. They are great in the mud, good on wet roads and ok on the beach.

They do destroy washer bottle pumps on full lock in reverse though :lol:

and rub on the front sway bar at full lock - but you get used to it. Very minor rubbing in the rear wheel arches

Wear level is Ok, strangely not as good as the older STT pattern, noise level is acceptable in my mind but some people find it too loud.

i didn't realise we could get 265's in on stock rims... is it hard to move the washer bottle? happy to make a few modifications

Personally for touring I wouldn't go the STT, they wear too quickly, I've said it before, I took 7mm of tread off brand new STT's in a two week trip thru outback SA. Bitumen roads were not the killer, it was the KM on the dirt roads that worn them down, I didn't notice anywear from the 2000kms on bitumen from SA to QLD on the return trip.

Anyway.

Either Are GOOD tyres, but its your choice. If you aren't touring much the STT will get you further up a track, but, the ST-C will take you further in kms.

i might go with the ST-C's and rely on CD or a poohtrol to get me out of trouble LOL

G'day Stephen,

I was looking at getting the same tyres (funnily enough also for vic high country and central OZ). Currently on ATRs but want a more aggressive tyre (and softer rubber for better bitumen grip).

My local tyre man said that ST-Cs were really only for a specific rock type and would wear excessively on bitumen.
He did recommend STTs though (which i thought strange as the ST-Cs and the STTs have the same compound?).

I questioned him on this - but he still wouldn't recommend ST-Cs. I thought perhaps he didn't want to get the ST-Cs coz they're not easily available in Vic?

So I contacted the "Cooper hotline" (the 1800 number) and spoke to a 'tyre expert'. He also didn't recommend the ST-Cs for bitumen use! He did recommend the STTs and the regular STs... Doesn't make sense to me - i woulda thought that the STTs would wear more than the ST-Cs...

Have you gotten any other feedback on the merits of the ST-Cs on bitumen?

with stu's lift you should have the space if you have an arb or TJM bar maybe not with the standard front bar. The washer bottle is easy to move if you have small hands - not much room under the hood.

But.... be warned fuel consumption will increase noticeably

not the smallest hands but i don't mind loosing a bit of bark in the process.
not tooo worried about consumption... i guzzzzzzzzel enough in sydney peakhour traffic so its a bit neither hear nor there, how much did you guy up from stock? from what i've seen its only 0.5-1l / 100 k or there abouts? and with our super huge fueltanks

i don't think that's going to make much of a difference between fuel stops

coopers website does say "The Cooper ST-C is NOT a replacement for the ST. The Cooper ST-C is a specialty tyre that is best suited to high gravel mileage while the ST will provide better mileage on sealed roads." the "C" stands for "cut and chip compund" i guess ST-CCC was a bit long for the stamping on the tyres... i'm pretty sure it is a different compound from the normal ST.

and i'm with you on thinking that the STT's would wear faster than ST's...

i think i'm going to flip a coin

lol i was hoping for a definitive answer but like all things car related it just don't seem to go that way LOL!

And then there is the Mickey Thompson MTZ or ATZ . ATZ I run with at the moment 245 x 75 x 16 and find them really good across the board. Quite an aggressive AT but excellent on the black top. Also proported to achieve 80k in wear. Cmohr runs them as well at times only on 15's.

Yes, I run them 80% of the time, I only put my Mudders on to drive OFFROAD. Otherwise, I go with the ATZ's excellent tyre.

My buddy had STT on his XJ, sold the jeep with the tires on it and still regrets it to this day. Great tires.

Just spoke to Mickey Thompson outlet and yes they are most certainly available. Presently have over 250 of the 245 x 75 x 16 around there branches. Gold coast tyre shop just quoted me $268 each fitted and balanced

May as well save money where you can I always say....

I have second hand ATZ's in the 15inch size on mine, got them for a resonable price too. I was going to but them anyway and the saving was a small bonus. So then I was able to pass that saving on to Greg when he bought my ATZ 16's off me.

PS...... Don't ask me why I'm on 15's ........even I don't understand why I did it, when I already had the 16's..

PPS.... Yes I agree, I have less cents than 4Yen and none of them are common.
